Scouting Together: How to Build a Game Plan as a Unit
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most underrated skills in competitive padel: scouting your opponents together as a pair and building a shared game plan before you step on court. Jack explores why padel preparation is fundamentally different from individual racket sports, and why the mindset shift from personal readiness to partnership readiness is the key to unlocking better performance. From watching opponents warm up at club level to analysing patterns of play in competitive matches, this episode gives you a practical framework for turning observations into actionable tactics. Topics covered in this episode include how to watch opponents together and build a shared tactical language, how to map opponent weaknesses against your own strengths as a partnership, why both players need ownership of the game plan for it to work effectively, how to make real-time in-match adjustments using a simple check-in system, and how repeated scouting and planning experiences build deeper trust between padel partners. Whether you play socially at your local club or compete in regional tournaments, the principles in this episode apply at every level. When One Partner Is Hot and One Is Not
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer tackles one of the most common and challenging dynamics in padel: what happens when one partner is playing out of their skin while the other is having a tough match. Whether you have been the player on fire watching your partner struggle, or the one having a nightmare while your partner carries the team, this episode gives you practical, honest guidance on how to handle both sides of the equation. Jack explores why overcompensating on the court can break down your tactical structure as a pair, and why the instinct to cover for a struggling partner can actually make things worse. He explains how to communicate positively without slipping into patronising territory, and why mid-game analysis from a partner is almost always counterproductive. For players going through a rough patch mid-match, Jack lays out a simple but effective approach: strip your game back, keep the ball in play, take the low-risk option, and stay mentally present. The episode also makes the case for having an honest pre-season or pre-match conversation with your partner about what you each need when things get hard, so you are not guessing in the heat of the moment. This episode is essential listening for padel doubles players of all levels, from club beginners to competitive league players. Topics covered include padel partnership communication, managing on-court momentum shifts, padel doubles strategy, mental resilience in padel, and how to support your partner during a difficult match. Rotating, Switching and Trusting: The Art of Court Coverage
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most essential skills in doubles padel: court coverage. Whether you're a beginner still figuring out positioning or an intermediate player looking to sharpen your teamwork, this episode delivers practical insight into the mechanics and mindset behind rotating, switching and moving as a unified pair. Jack explores the concept of lateral movement as a team unit, explaining why chasing the ball together is one of the most common and costly mistakes in recreational padel. He then unpacks the difference between rotation and switching, two distinct but often confused movement patterns that can make or break a rally. Listeners will learn when to step forward, when to hold position, and how to execute a switch with total commitment. At the heart of the episode is a conversation about trust. Jack argues that the best padel partnerships are not necessarily the most technically polished, but the ones built on genuine in-game understanding and clear pre-agreed systems. From deciding who covers the middle ball to knowing the triggers for a positional switch, having these conversations off the court can transform how a pair performs under pressure. This episode is ideal for club players, social competitors and anyone looking to get more out of their padel partnership. The Argument After the Match: Handling Conflict Off the Glass
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer tackles one of the most relatable but least talked-about aspects of recreational and competitive padel: conflict between partners after a match. Whether it's a simmering tension that finally boils over in the car park or a full-blown disagreement about tactics and shot selection, post-match arguments are a shared experience for padel players at every level. Jack explores why padel creates such a uniquely pressurised environment for partnerships, breaking down the fishbowl nature of the court, the visibility of every mistake, and the compressed emotional build-up that makes post-match conversations so charged. He offers practical, grounded advice on how to handle these moments constructively, including the importance of giving yourself time before engaging, being honest about the real source of your frustration, and leading with curiosity instead of accusation. The episode also addresses the quieter side of conflict: what happens when one partner withdraws into silence, and why that can be just as damaging to a partnership as an outright argument. Jack reframes conflict not as a sign of a failing partnership but as an opportunity to build the communication skills that separate improving players from stagnant ones. This episode is essential listening for anyone who plays padel with a regular partner, whether you're competing in local leagues or simply enjoying social matches on weekends. Topics covered include partner communication in padel, managing post-match emotions, padel partnership dynamics, conflict resolution in sport, and how to have difficult conversations with your padel partner without damaging the relationship. Playing to Their Strengths When You Know Your Own
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most underrated skills in doubles padel: self-awareness. Titled Playing to Their Strengths When You Know Your Own, this episode explores how understanding your own game at a genuine level is the foundation for becoming a truly effective padel partner. Jack unpacks why most club-level players have only a surface-level understanding of their own strengths, and how that lack of clarity leads to reactive, uncoordinated play. Through practical examples, including how a strong bandeja player can set up their partner for a finishing smash, Jack illustrates the direct link between self-knowledge and partnership intelligence. The episode also tackles the common trap of over-relying on your strengths to the point of crowding your partner out. Jack explains how dominating the court from a place of strength can actually damage a partnership over time, eroding your partner's rhythm and confidence. Listeners will also hear Jack's honest take on vulnerability in partnerships, specifically why sharing your weaknesses with your partner is not a sign of weakness but a strategic advantage that allows both players to protect and support each other more effectively. The episode closes with a practical off-court challenge encouraging players to reflect on three strengths and three development areas before their next session, then share those insights with their partner. Whether you're a beginner building your first padel partnership or an experienced player looking to elevate your doubles game, this episode delivers actionable insights grounded in the real dynamics of padel partnership play. Covering the Middle Without Stepping on Each Other's Toes
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer dives deep into one of the most essential yet often overlooked aspects of doubles padel strategy: covering the middle of the court. Whether you're a beginner just starting out or an intermediate player looking to sharpen your game, understanding how to share responsibility in the centre of the court with your partner can be the difference between winning and losing crucial points. Jack breaks down the classic forehand rule and explains why it works as a default system, while also exploring the nuances of positioning, movement, and situational awareness that take your middle coverage to the next level. You'll learn why communication between partners before and during a match is not just helpful but essential, and how building a clear, agreed-upon system eliminates the hesitation and clashes that cost teams easy points. The episode also covers the importance of synchronised lateral movement, knowing when to let a ball go rather than forcing a poor shot, and the role that trust plays in building a truly effective partnership on the padel court. Jack wraps up with a practical drill you can use in your very next session to start making middle coverage feel instinctive and automatic. Talk or Telepathy: Building Your On-Court Communication System
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of the most overlooked aspects of padel doubles play — on-court communication. Whether you are a beginner finding your feet or an intermediate player looking to sharpen your partnership, building a clear and consistent communication system is the fastest way to level up your game. Jack covers everything from the essential pre-match conversation — including how to divide roles, agree on signals, and set tactical intentions before the first ball is struck — to the critical in-rally calls that prevent costly confusion. The episode also explores the communication that happens between points, arguing that those brief moments of reset and connection are just as valuable as anything that happens during play. Who Plays Where? Mastering the Left and Right Side Dynamic
In this episode of Padel Up: The Perfect Partnership, host Jack Mercer breaks down one of padel's most essential tactical concepts — the left side and right side court dynamic. Understanding who plays where is a foundational skill for any padel doubles pair, whether you're a complete beginner or a developing club player looking to sharpen your game. Jack explains why the left side is traditionally held by the more experienced player, covering the technical demands of backhand overheads, the bandeja, and the vibora smash. He also explores how having a left-handed player on the right side can transform a partnership's attacking shape by creating a dual-forehand formation — a setup seen at the highest levels of professional padel. The episode covers court coverage and responsibility zones during rallies, helping listeners understand that side selection is about more than just starting position — it defines how a pair moves and communicates throughout an entire point. Jack addresses the common mistake of leaving the middle channel undefended and offers practical advice on how partners can have productive conversations about court ownership. Listeners are encouraged to experiment with both sides during training and social play to develop a fuller understanding of the game's tactical landscape.
