Ep. 48: Defying Expectations and the Gravity of Manako Kajii - "BUTTER"
Following up on the Japanese episode, I’m talking about Asako Yuzuki's Butter - a novel that became a massive hit and the Waterstones Book of the Year in the UK in 2024.
While I was initially expecting a classic murder mystery inspired by a real-life case, the story dug much deeper into the fierce and tightly guarded worldview of the suspect, Manako Kajii.
In this episode, I share my thoughts on the striking contrast between Kajii and the journalist Rika, who slowly gets swallowed up by Kajii' magnatic pull and lifestyle.
We also explore the book's raw portrayal of the suffocating pressures placed on women in Japanese society, unrealistic beauty standards, and the complexities of female friendship.
Did this book resonate globally because these struggles with misogyny and societal expectations are universal, or because of its specific glimpse into the toxicity of Japanese culture?
