The Real Cost of Doing Business: Tracking Essential KPIs (with Ruth King)

This week on P&L, I'm joined by Ruth King, a renowned financial consultant and profitability expert in the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical industries. With a background in chemical engineering and an MBA in finance, Ruth brings a highly analytical, numbers-first approach to building and scaling home service businesses. In this episode, she breaks down the specific KPIs every business owner should be tracking, the crucial importance of moving your company through "no man's land" by building a management team, and why running personal expenses through your business is a terrible strategy if you ever plan to sell. Tune in this week on P&L to learn how to keep your books clean, track your true overhead, and prepare your business for a successful eventual transition. Connect with Ruth King directly via text at 678-296-4123. "If the goal is to sell the business and have a profitable, well-run, financially fit business, then you've got to have the inventory and do it properly." — Ruth King This week on Priorities & Lifestyle: Defining the "Revenue-Generating Unit": Why understanding exactly how your business creates revenue is the very first step toward profitability. Tracking Your Overhead Cost Per Hour: Why generating $10 million in revenue doesn't matter if your net profit is only $1.21 an hour. The "No Man's Land" of Growth: The dangerous phase where an owner transitions from micro-managing to needing a true management team. The Five-Minute Daily Fraud Check: Why checking your bank and credit card statements every single day is the ultimate defense against embezzlement. Working Capital 101: How to track the "grease for the machine" and why declining working capital usually points to declining profitability. The "Die in Your Chair or Sell" Reality: Why you need to build hobbies and a life outside of your business so you have something to exit to. Our Favorite Quotes: "You're going to exit your business. Either you're going to die in your chair or you're going to sell it... It's much better to plan the exit rather than have the exit happen to you." — Ruth King "If you're only looking at year-end statements, you'll never see a monthly statement. And so as a result, [fraud or manipulation] gets hidden until we dump all the months into the software." — Ruth King "We are all mortals... if all that ever really happened is exactly the way we drew it up when we were 18, that would be so boring." — Rob Schulz About Rob Schulz and P&L Priorities & LIfestyle Podcast The P&L: Priorities & Lifestyle Podcast is a show for business owners. Building, Selling, and Starting Over in the Trades (with Joe Strittmatter)

This week on P&L, I'm joined by Joe Strittmatter, a second-generation HVAC entrepreneur who turned a reluctant entry into the family business into a massive industry success story. This episode traces Joe's evolution from surviving the 2008 construction crash to scaling a highly sophisticated residential service company. Joe shares his raw experience of walking away from a private equity buyout on the actual day of closing, only to return to the market 24 months later with an M&A advisor to secure four times his original offer. We also dive into his "1% better" customer service philosophy, the power of a "Call-by-Call" manager system, and why he's diving back into the hyper-competitive Dallas-Fort Worth market to build a new greenfield company with his son. Tune in this week on P&L to learn why focusing on your post-exit lifestyle number matters far more than an inflated EBITDA multiple. Learn more at https://callritenow.com/ or contact Joe at joe@callritenow.com. "Figure out what it costs for you to live the life that you want to live the rest of your life... That's the number. I don't care what your multiple is." - Joe Strittmatter This week on Priorities & Lifestyle: Surviving the Housing Crash: Pivoting from new construction to residential service and avoiding the franchise trap. The Power of Mentorship: How joining Service Nation and learning from industry legends catalyzed massive revenue growth. The "Call-by-Call" Manager: Using technology and specialized roles to boost sales, ensure quality control, and relieve field technicians. Winning on Value, Not Price: How swag bags, extreme warranties, and upfront communication beat lower-priced competitors every time. The Private Equity Frenzy: The strategic difference between accepting a single offer and running a competitive M&A process. The Multiple Fallacy: Why focusing on your post-exit lifestyle number matters far more than an inflated EBITDA multiple. Our Favorite Quotes: "If you have a big earn out sitting out there, something's wrong with your company. There's something that whoever's buying you did not like." - Joe Strittmatter "You've got to get some support and help from somewhere." - Rob Schulz "We just try to stay 1% better every day than our competition. And that's how we close." - Joe Strittmatter About Rob Schulz and P&L Priorities & LIfestyle Podcast The P&L: Priorities & Lifestyle Podcast is a show for business owners. Bringing Northern Electrical Standards to Texas (with Jason Mills)

This week on P&L, I'm joined by Jason Mills, a former Marine and founder of ElectraTex. After working in his family's highly successful, third-generation union electrical business in upstate New York, Jason decided to forge his own path. He packed up, moved to Mansfield, Texas, and started his own company from scratch. In this episode, Jason shares the stark differences in building codes and quality standards between New York and Texas, how he navigated the sudden loss of federal EV tax credits, and the discipline it takes to build a reputation in a brand-new market. We also dive into the future of the electrical trade, including the rise of bi-directional EV charging, battery backup systems like the Tesla Powerwall, and how AI and instant-pricing models are changing the home service industry. Tune in this week on P&L to learn why taking pride in your work and refusing to compete on price alone is the ultimate competitive advantage. Learn more at https://www.electratex.com/. "I still feel like there's people out there that want quality work and get what you pay for, not price per square foot, so let's put it out there." - Jason Mills This week on Priorities & Lifestyle: Military Discipline in Business The Texas vs. New York Standard Surviving Market Shocks The Future of Home Power Instant Pricing & AI Building Your Own Legacy Our Favorite Quotes: "As long as you can show up every single day, whether you want to be there or not, it doesn't matter. You're there. And that's always been my key to everything I've done in life." - Jason Mills "At the end of the day, it's you versus you... nobody's going to tell me I didn't try or I didn't give everything I got for it." - Jason Mills "I don't care if you're the smartest guy in the room... as long as you're willing to show up and give me everything you got, I'll show up every day and give you guys everything I got." - Jason Mills About Rob Schulz and P&L Priorities & LIfestyle Podcast The P&L: Priorities & Lifestyle Podcast is a show for business owners.
