239. Jason Phelps
Jason Phelps joins me on the podcast for a great conversation about hunting, calling, business and the story behind Phelps Game Calls.
We start with how Phelps Game Calls came to be and what it took to turn an idea and a passion for hunting into a business that has become a well known name in the calling world. Jason talks about the early days, the process of developing calls, learning what works in the field and what it is like building a life and a business around something you genuinely love.
We get into what makes a good game call and the importance of having confidence in the equipment you carry into the woods. We also talk about the calling industry, the business side of the outdoor world and some of the challenges that come with trying to grow a brand while staying true to the reason you started it in the first place.
A big part of the conversation is elk hunting. Jason walks through different elk scenarios and we talk about how he approaches calling depending on what the elk are doing. We get into aggressive bulls, pressured elk, locating animals, getting close, knowing when to make a call and perhaps more importantly, knowing when to shut up.
We also talk about some of the lessons that come from spending years chasing elk and how every hunt can teach you something different.
