In the ancient Alshech shul in Tsfat, I found a timeless Torah wisdom that spoke directly to my modern life. It was too profound to keep to myself.
Join me, Shlomo Godsi, for real conversations with today’s great rabbis. We dive deep into the Parsha for practical truths to elevate your busy life.

Shalom Pasternak | God Gave Us the Land. That's Our Only Claim.
Every nation on earth holds its land because somebody took it, and nobody calls that stealing until it's this one.

Rabbi Shalom Pasternak runs a yeshiva in Tsfat and was one of Shlomo Godsi's first teachers there. They start in Parashat Ki Tavo with the first fruits, with why a farmer's basket gets called the reason the world was made at all, and end up at the opening line of the Torah, where Rashi, writing a thousand years ago, answers a charge still being made word for word. Sixteen minutes in, Pasternak asks why anyone calls us thieves when conquest has never been treated as theft anywhere else.
The last stretch is the curses at the end of Ki Tavo, and a son who got sick listening to them.

Shlomo Godsi | I Couldn't Lift Two Kilos. How Do I Lift a Ton?
Why would a good God write a curse into the same verse as the blessing?

Shlomo Godsi founded the Alshech Academy in Tsfat, and this week, on his own, he works through the opening lines of Parashat Re'eh and the argument the angels made against creating a being who could walk away from God. He can find only two commandments in the whole Torah where the reward is spelled out, and one of them is about a bird. About ten minutes in he stops teaching and talks about the two kilo weights his wife kept trying to get him to use during a year of serious illness, and what he told her about them before he got worse.
Recorded in the week leading into Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Yacov Drori | You Don't Understand the Torah... Until You Get It Wrong
You don't really understand the Torah, one teaching says, until you've already gotten it wrong.

Yacov Drori is a spiritual teacher, engineer, and former rabbi of the House of Love and Prayer in Safed. Drawing on Hasidic thought, prayer, and years of leading a community, he asks how old Jewish wisdom still speaks to the way we live now. In this conversation on Parashat Re'eh he reads the command to "see" against the command to "hear," treats blessing and curse as a single choice rather than two, and asks why God made a world where the poor never disappear. In the final minutes the host asks the one question he puts to every guest, and Drori's answer reframes everything before it.
Parashat Re'eh, heard as an invitation rather than a warning.
