Allowing dads to be vulnerable: Glenn Faircloth

We're back to share some previously recorded episodes with Glenn who runs the instagram account Autism With Freddie for an honest conversation about fatherhood, autism advocacy, and the emotional realities of raising a neurodivergent child. We discuss the shortage of male voices in the autism community and the reassurance fathers can find by connecting with parents who share similar experiences. From navigating non-verbal communication and physical aggression to dealing with judgement, schooling pressures, and the grief of letting go of expected milestones, we speak openly about the challenges we all face. This conversation explores the effect on siblings, the difficulty of balancing independence with safety, and the constant worry about who will care for their children in the future. Throughout the episode, we reflect on patience, acceptance, and the importance of redefining success around emotional regulation, happiness, and each child’s individual needs. For fathers beginning their own autism journey, the message is clear: ignore outside expectations, find the support that works for your family, and do not be afraid to speak honestly about the difficult emotions that come with parenting.

The Happy Healthy Unicorn: Vicky Finlayson

This week we sit down with Vicky Finlayson — naturopath, nutritional therapist, and author of Flourish — for a deeply honest conversation about what it really means when a child is diagnosed with autism, and why that label so often marks the end of a medical investigation rather than the beginning of one. Vicky opens up about her daughter Rose's early years: a traumatic birth involving hypoxia, a cascade of recurring infections, rounds of antibiotics, and a healthcare system that repeatedly told her everything was fine. By the time Rose received her autism diagnosis at four, Vicky was exhausted, isolated, and being handed strategies that did nothing for a child in chronic physiological distress. Together, we unpick the tension at the heart of the current autism conversation — between celebrating neurodiversity and honestly confronting the reality of children who are seriously unwell. We argue that these are not the same thing, and that conflating them is doing real harm to families who need medical answers, not affirmation. The turning point in Rose's story came through diet. Removing gluten and dairy produced changes that years of conventional support had failed to deliver — and sent Vicky down a path into naturopathy, the Walsh Institute, gut health research, and eventually a full clinical practice dedicated to helping other families find the same answers. The conversation covers a lot of ground: the significance of early antibiotic use and vaccine reactions, the "perfect storm" of lab findings Vicky sees repeatedly in her caseload (fungal overgrowth, parasites, high copper, low zinc, oxalate toxicity), why casein is particularly problematic for non-verbal children, the limitations of the ARFID label, and the nuances of dietary fine-tuning once gluten and dairy are removed. Vicky also announces the launch of a new paid parent community on @thrivehub.community — designed to give families who can't access one-to-one support an affordable space with weekly practitioner Q&As and educational workshops. A rich, practical, and at times quietly radical episode for any parent who has ever felt that their child's diagnosis explained nothing. @thehappyhealthyunicorn

   GAPS Coaching with Lyndsy Moffatt

What does it actually look like to watch your non-verbal, severely autistic child come back to you through food? In this episode, Joe and Kayleigh sit down with Lyndsy Moffatt, GAPS coach and founder of the Autism Biomedical Research Foundation, who did exactly that. Lyndsy's son was diagnosed at three with severe autism. Meltdowns lasting over an hour, elopement, extreme picky eating, 28 food allergies, and an ATEC score of 163. Today, he's 16, eats almost anything, and scores a two. The journey wasn't linear. A single plate of cheese and crackers at a birthday party wiped out six months of progress overnight. But Lyndsy came back, restarted GAPS from scratch, and this time built the protocol around the one element she believes most people overlook: meat stock. In this conversation, Lyndsy shares what she's learned coaching parents of non-verbal children through the GAPS Introduction Diet, why she removes all dairy regardless of what the standard protocol suggests, how the gut governs everything from folate absorption to the effectiveness of every other therapy, and why a parent's belief in their child's capacity to heal matters as much as anything on the plate. She also opens up about the Autism Biomedical Research Foundation, which she founded to fund functional lab testing for families who can't afford it, and why she sees GAPS as the missing link that makes everything else work better. If you've been told recovery isn't possible, this episode is for you.
