[…] The main terrorist threat to planes was thought to be hijackers. There had been hijacking events throughout the prior decades, mostly involving foreign planes. For example, Air France Flight 139 in 1976, TW Flight 847 in 1985, and Egypt Air Flight 648 also in 1985. A second concern was the bombing of planes, usually from baggage that had been checked in by passengers who actually never boarded the plane. Air India Flight 182 and more infamously Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988 were just such attacks. Another concern was the shooting down of planes. Many civilian planes have been shot down over the decades, albeit by governments or rebel military forces. […]
