Tuesday Musings: Autumn Learnings
Hello, and welcome.
I’ve been thinking quite a lot about autumn recently.
Perhaps it’s because it’s such a noticeable season. There are little changes happening almost every day. The mornings feel different. The light changes. There’s a coolness in the air that wasn’t there a few weeks ago. Leaves begin turning from green to gold, copper and deep red, and gradually the landscape starts to soften into a completely different rhythm.
And I love that about autumn.
But this year, I’ve found myself thinking about it as more than simply a beautiful season.
Because when we really pay attention to what’s happening in nature, autumn has quite a lot to teach us about how we live.
About slowing down.
About change.
About our relationship with rest and productivity.
About letting go.
And perhaps, most importantly, about learning to live a little more gently.
So today, I thought I’d share four of the things autumn has been reminding me of.
Not rules. Not another list of things we should be doing.
Just a few reflections that you might like to take into your own life and see what resonates with you.
🍂 We don’t have to keep growing all the time
I think this is one of the things I find most fascinating about the natural world.
We celebrate spring because everything begins to grow.
We love summer because everything feels abundant and full.
And then autumn comes along and nature does something completely different.
It begins to draw inward.
The trees aren’t trying to produce more leaves. Plants aren’t desperately trying to keep flowering. The natural world doesn’t resist the change and decide that perhaps it ought to work a little harder to keep summer going.
There is a shift in energy.
And yet, as human beings, we can find that incredibly difficult.
We’re surrounded by messages encouraging us to do more, achieve more, improve ourselves, become more productive, make better use of our time.
Even our rest can become something we feel we have to do well.
And I wonder sometimes whether we’ve forgotten that we are allowed to have seasons too.
There will be times when we have lots of energy and ideas.
Times when we want to create and explore and say yes to everything.
And there will be other times when our energy is quieter.
When our body asks us to slow down.
When we need more rest, more space, perhaps fewer demands.
I’ve certainly become much more aware of this in my own life — noticing my energy rather than automatically pushing against it.
And I don’t always get it right.
Sometimes I still find myself thinking about what I should be doing rather than noticing what I actually need.
But autumn reminds me that drawing inward isn’t the opposite of living.
It’s part of living.
Maybe we don’t have to be blossoming all of the time.
Sometimes conserving our energy is exactly what we need.
🍁 Letting go doesn’t have to be dramatic
Of course, we can’t talk about autumn without talking about letting go.
It’s probably one of the most familiar autumn messages.
The trees release their leaves, so we should release whatever no longer serves us.
And there’s truth in that.
But I’ve been thinking about it slightly differently.
Because when I watch the trees, there isn’t really a dramatic moment of letting go.
One leaf falls.
Then another.
Some stay for much longer than we expect.
A gust of wind comes along and a few more flutter to the ground.
It’s gradual.
Natural.
There isn’t a deadline.
And perhaps that’s something worth remembering in our own lives.
Because sometimes we’re told that we need to let go of something as though it’s a decision we can simply make.
Let go of the past.
Let go of worry.
Let go of an old version of yourself.
Let go of expectations.
But some things aren’t that easy.
And perhaps they don’t need to be.
Maybe instead of forcing ourselves to let go, we can simply begin to loosen our hold.
I really like that idea.
Loosening rather than forcing.
Perhaps there’s an expectation you’ve been carrying about how life should look.
Perhaps you’ve been holding yourself to an impossible standard.
Perhaps there’s a plan that hasn’t worked out quite as you imagined.
You don’t necessarily have to make some enormous declaration that you’re letting it go forever.
Maybe you can just hold it a little less tightly.
Allow a little space around it.
And see what happens.
Sometimes release happens gradually.
One leaf at a time.
🌰 Quiet doesn’t mean nothing is happening
This might be my favourite autumn reminder.
As the season moves on, the landscape can begin to look increasingly empty.
The flowers disappear.
The leaves fall.
Branches become bare.
Gardens become quieter.
And if we only looked at what we could see above the ground, we might think everything had stopped.
But of course, it hasn’t.
Roots are still there.
Seeds are resting in the earth.
Energy is being conserved.
The soil is still alive.
So much is happening that we simply can’t see.
And I think there are times in our lives that are like that too.
Periods when we don’t feel as though we’re moving forward.
Maybe something we’ve been working towards isn’t happening quickly enough.
Maybe we’re recovering from something.
Maybe we’re uncertain about what’s next.
Or perhaps we’re simply in a quieter period of our lives.
It’s very easy to look at those times and think we’re somehow standing still.
But we don’t always know what’s happening beneath the surface.
We may be processing.
Learning.
Healing.
Changing our perspective.
Gathering strength.
Or simply allowing ourselves to be where we are.
Not every kind of growth is visible.
And not every season needs to produce something.
I think there’s something incredibly reassuring about that.
Quiet seasons count too.
We don’t have to prove that something is happening.
Sometimes being here — living, breathing, noticing, experiencing — is enough.
🍂 Notice what’s here
And then there is perhaps the simplest lesson of all.
Autumn reminds us to notice.
Because it changes so quickly.
You can walk past a tree one week and it’s beginning to turn gold.
A few days later it can be glowing with colour.
And then suddenly the branches are almost bare.
If we’re not paying attention, we can miss it.
And isn’t life rather like that?
We’re so often thinking about what comes next.
Tomorrow.
Next week.
The thing we need to finish.
The place we need to be.
Even while something beautiful is happening right in front of us.
Autumn invites us back into our senses.
Notice the colour of the leaves.
Feel the cooler air on your skin.
Listen to the sound beneath your feet as you walk.
Notice the changing light.
Feel your breath.
And it doesn’t have to be anything extraordinary.
Perhaps it’s the warmth of your hands around a mug.
Sunlight coming through a window.
A conversation with someone you love.
A bird appearing in the garden.
A moment when you suddenly realise that, right now, you feel peaceful.
These little moments can be incredibly easy to overlook because we’re waiting for something bigger.
But so much of our life is made from these ordinary moments.
And perhaps autumn’s reminder isn’t that everything is disappearing.
Perhaps it’s simply:
Be here for it.
Notice this season while you’re living it.
Notice this day.
Notice this moment.
🌿 Taking autumn with us
So as I move into this autumn, I’m trying to carry some of these lessons with me.
To rush a little less.
To notice a little more.
To respect my energy rather than constantly expecting it to be the same.
To loosen my hold on some of the things I don’t need to carry quite so tightly.
And to remember that quiet periods aren’t empty periods.
Perhaps you’d like to think about what autumn is asking of you.
Not what you need to achieve before winter.
Not another list to complete.
Just…
What might you need a little more of right now?
Maybe it’s rest.
Maybe it’s space.
Maybe you need to get outside more.
Perhaps it’s creativity.
Connection.
Movement.
Laughter.
Stillness.
Or perhaps you don’t know yet.
And that’s okay too.
You can simply begin by noticing.
Because I think that’s one of the loveliest things nature teaches us.
We don’t always have to fight the changing seasons of our lives.
Sometimes we can learn to move with them.
To recognise when it’s time to grow and when it’s time to rest.
When it’s time to hold on and when we might loosen our grip.
When it’s time to move outward…
and when it’s time to gather ourselves home.
So wherever you are as you’re listening today, perhaps take a moment to look around you.
Notice something that tells you the season is changing.
And allow that to be your little reminder:
You are allowed to have seasons too.
Thank you for spending this time with me today.
I hope something I’ve shared has stayed with you — perhaps even something you’ll notice differently the next time you step outside.
Take gentle care of yourself.
And I’ll meet you again soon for another Peaceful Healer Podcast. 🍂🌿
