Persistent obstruction beyond one year of age or signs of decryocystitis such as a painful swollen lacrimal sac or an ophthalmology referral. Next, let's discuss patients whose main symptoms are irritation, itching, or mild discomfort rather than true pain. These are among the most common pediatric red eye presentations. Viral conjunctivitis is extremely common in children, especially if they attend daycare or school. Patients typically present with watery discharge, diffuse conjunctival injection, which refers to the dilation of the conjunctival blood vessels giving the red eye appearance, gritty sensation, upper respiratory infection symptoms, and a history of contact with similarly affected individuals.
