   I lost him...

What happens when you’re 20 years old, you lose the person you’ve always relied on, and suddenly you’re expected to figure out what comes next? I sat down with Brock from In-House Plants for a conversation about his dad, motocross, business, family and the hard things that have shaped the person he is today. Brock grew up racing motocross from the age of five, eventually competing professionally in stadiums around Australia. His dad was beside him throughout that journey, and when Brock walked away from racing at 18, they moved into their next chapter together. Then Brock lost him. At 20, life changed very quickly. There’s a moment Brock shares about the days after his dad died that captures what it feels like when the person you’d normally call for the answer suddenly isn’t there. And from there, we get into what happens when life hands you responsibilities you never expected to carry yet. Years later, that same willingness to look at something unfamiliar and think I can figure this out would show up again in a completely different way. It eventually led Brock to build In-House Plants, an indoor plant hire business now working across residential properties, commercial spaces, weddings and events. And the way that business started is one of my favourite parts of the conversation. Brock describes himself as slightly delusional and I think there’s something in that. We talk about: - Brock’s motocross career and the relationship he built with his dad through racing - Losing his dad at 20 and having life change almost overnight - What hard experiences taught him about empathy, resilience and other people - Figuring out what comes next when you don’t feel ready for what’s in front of you - The unexpected opportunity that eventually became In-House Plants - Why Brock now deliberately chooses to do hard things This is one of those conversations that starts with the business someone has built and takes you back through the experiences that shaped the person who built it. Because there’s always more behind what we see from the outside. And Brock’s story is worth hearing. Losing one employee could cost your business at least $80,000.

I sat down with Pip from Premier Team Building to talk about workplace culture, leadership and what actually happens when businesses get their people wrong. Pip is a leadership and culture coach who believes there’s no such thing as a “good” or “bad” culture. There’s only culture that’s fit for purpose. And this conversation goes well beyond team-building days and office perks. Pip shares his own experience of spending almost 20 years in an organisation he loved, only to eventually walk away when the culture changed. We talk about what that experience taught him, why losing great people costs businesses far more than their salary, and what leaders can actually do to create environments where people want to stay. We talk about: The real cost of losing good employees Why there’s no such thing as a good or bad culture Hiring people who actually fit the culture you’re building Why great employees don’t automatically make great leaders Creating safety within a team Why knowing your people matters more than expensive perks Team building vs team bonding and why they’re not the same thing Asking for employee feedback — and actually doing something with it Why “clear is kind” when it comes to difficult conversations Pip’s own experience of leaving a culture that had once felt like home How leaders can intentionally build a culture that’s fit for where the business is going Whether you lead two people or 200, this conversation is a good reminder that culture isn’t something you fix with one team-building afternoon. It’s something you’re building every day. Website: https://premierteambuilding.com.au/ (https://premierteambuilding.com.au/) Find Premier Team Building on LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube. I was slowly killing myself - Cody Carroll

For years, people told Cody Carroll from Pronto Junk that his dad would be proud of him. But Cody knew there was a period of his life where that wasn’t true. At 19, Cody was on his way towards the professional football career he’d dreamed about since he was a kid. Then his dad was diagnosed with stage four cancer and passed away. Cody lost more than his dad. He lost a huge part of his identity. What followed were years of depression, gambling, drugs and partying, until Cody reached a point where he knew something had to change. In this conversation, Cody shares what it took to start rebuilding his life, getting professional help, understanding his addictions and triggers, and learning that recovery wasn’t always a straight line. We also talk about becoming a dad himself to Hudson, the kind of man he wants his son to grow up watching, and how supporting his partner Jess through postpartum depression and anxiety changed the way he approached both family and business. We talk about: Losing his dad and the identity he’d built around football Depression, gambling, drugs, alcohol and seeking professional help Relapse, recovery and changing the people and environments around him Learning to make himself proud first Fatherhood and becoming a role model for Hudson Jess’s experience with postpartum depression and anxiety Stepping away from the tools and how it helped Pronto Junk grow Why empathy, giving back and zero judgement sit at the heart of Pronto Junk There’s a lot in this conversation about grief, addiction, fatherhood, business and starting again. But perhaps the biggest shift for Cody was this: At first, he wanted to make his dad proud. Now, he wants to make himself proud first.
