About Peter the Great: The Tsar Who Modernized Russia — Fexingo History
Peter the Great, the first Russian emperor to embrace the West, dragged a medieval kingdom into the modern age. This show follows his tumultuous reign from 1682 to 1725, covering the Great Northern War against Sweden, the founding of St. Petersburg on the Neva marshes, and his radical reforms of the Russian army, navy, bureaucracy, and church. We explore the streltsy uprisings, the secret Grand Embassy to Europe (where Peter worked incognito in Dutch shipyards), and the brutal suppression of the Old Believers. Lucas and Luna unpack Peter's obsession with technology, his establishment of the Table of Ranks, and his creation of the first Russian newspaper. They also delve into the darker side: the torture of his own son Alexei, the heavy tax burden on serfs, and the forced westernization of the boyar elite. How did a tsar who stood nearly seven feet tall reshape a continent? And what does his legacy mean for Russia's ongoing identity as a bridge—or a barrier—between East and West? From the frozen Baltic to the Caspian Sea, this is the story of a ruler who willed a superpower into existence.

In 1697, Peter I disguised himself as a common soldier to join the Grand Embassy, a massive diplomatic mission to Western Europe. This episode explores how this self-imposed anonymity allowed him to bypass court protocol and learn statecraft firsthand. We follow his journey through Germany and the Netherlands, where he worked incognito at shipyards in Amsterdam and studied under Dutch masters. The narrative focuses on his obsessive observation of European technology, military drills, and political structures, contrasting his humble disguise with his eventual revelation as the ruler of Russia. We examine the strategic goals of the embassy, its interactions with William III of England and various German princes, and how these experiences shaped Peter’s modernization efforts upon his return.

Peter the Great's Iron Discipline at Poltava
In this episode, we turn away from the cultural skirmishes of beard taxes and the architectural struggles of St. Petersburg to focus on the military crucible that defined Peter’s reign: the Great Northern War and the Battle of Poltava in 1709. While previous episodes have explored his naval ambitions and social engineering, here we examine the rigid discipline he imposed on the Russian army, particularly the infamous 'Enlisted Man's Charter' which introduced severe corporal punishment to forge a professional fighting force. We follow the campaign through the scorched earth tactics of the Swedish retreat and the brutal siege of Perevolochna, where Peter confronted his own son, Tsarevich Alexei, for the first time in a context of treason. The narrative centers on the tactical brilliance of Charles XII’s earlier campaigns versus the grinding attrition that finally broke the Swedish army, highlighting the personal toll on Peter as he managed both the front lines and the treacherous politics of succession. Listeners will encounter specific details about the Cossack leader Mazepa, the role of Vasily Tatishchev in intelligence gathering, and the immediate aftermath that cemented Russia as a European power.

Peter the Great's Secret Service: The Preobrazhensky Prikaz
While most history podcasts focus on Peter the Great’s battles or his new capital, we are turning our attention to the machinery of control that made those achievements possible. This episode explores the Preobrazhensky Prikaz, a secret police organization established in 1718 that operated with terrifying efficiency. We examine how Pyotr I transformed this body into an instrument of total surveillance, using informants and torture to root out perceived treason within his own court. You will hear about the specific methods used by officials like Prince Vasily Golitsyn and the chilling impact on the Russian nobility. Through the stories of arrests, interrogations, and the systematic dismantling of dissent, we reveal how modernization was enforced not just through ships and schools, but through fear. This is a look at the shadow side of the Enlightenment in Russia, where loyalty was measured in silence and survival.
