How do you say hydrochlorothiazide? (Pronunciation Series Episode 73)
This is the 73rd episode in my drug pronunciation series. In this episode, I divide hydrochlorothiazide into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, list my sources, and introduce some bonus topics: one pronunciation variation and two abbreviations. Why did I pick hydrochlorothiazide for this episode? It is frequently prescribed. It's a long, intimidating drug name. It is found in combination with other blood pressure medications. It's a drug name in my pronunciation course, which ends in December 2026. There are still more than 50 drug names in the course that have not been part of the pronunciation series. It is my goal to include all 50+ in the drug pronunciation series eventually. ❌ We don't cover pharmacology in this series. Just pronunciations. ⭐️ Sign up for The Pharmacist's Voice ® monthly email newsletter! https://bit.ly/3AHJIaF ⭐️ Hydrochlorothiazide = HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide (7 syllables) HYE, like high blood pressure droe, like a drone KLOR, like chloride oh, like the letter "O" in the alphabet THYE, like the body part, thigh a, which is a short "A" sound, like the "a" in adoption (uh) zide, which rhymes with tide, as in the ocean tide Emphasize HYE, KLOR, and THYE. THYE gets the most emphasis. Written pronunciation source: MedlinePlus.gov Spoken pronunciation example: Tony PharmD HCTZ pronunciation (YouTube) Pronunciation Variation As an Ohio Pharmacist, I tend to say HYE-droe-KLOR-uh-THYE-a-zide instead of HYE-droe-KLOR-oh-THYE-a-zide. They sound VERY similar. The difference is "uh" vs "oh." Either spoken pronunciation will pass as correct. They're both "in the ballpark." Two abbreviations HCTZ HCT If you know someone who would like to learn how to say hydrochlorothiazide, please share this episode with them. Author-Read Audiobooks with Laura English, Audiobook Narrator
Should you narrate your own audiobook? In this episode, I talk with my friend and colleague Laura English, an audiobook narrator and producer who works closely with independent authors through Laura English Voice Over and Evergreen Studios. We discuss why authors should consider an audiobook, how to practice and prepare, home recording versus studio recording, coaching and directing, proofing and pickups, technical specifications, distribution, and marketing. We also discuss three production paths: doing everything yourself, narrating your book while hiring help with post-production, or hiring a professional narrator. Laura and I met during audiobook narration training in 2019. She was there when The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast was still an idea, which makes this conversation a full-circle moment for me. Laura is not a pharmacist, but her experience is highly relevant to pharmacist authors and other subject-matter experts who are deciding whether to narrate their own nonfiction books. As of August 2026, Laura offers audiobook consults at no cost. Book a discovery call with her, and get your questions answered. There are too many nuances to mention in a podcast episode, so don't be shy — Contact Laura! Laura English - Evergreen Studios: Simsbury, Connecticut Website https://www.lauraenglishvo.com/ Discovery Call with Laura https://www.lauraenglishvo.com/book-a-discovery-call/ Service for Authors https://www.lauraenglishvo.com/service-for-authors/ Email laura@lauraenglishvo.com LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-english-boogaert-8a9aba7b/ Instagram https://www.instagram.com/lauraenglishvo/?hl=en Why Make an Audiobook? Laura encourages authors to think of audio as one more way for readers to experience a book. Some people prefer audiobooks, while "hybrid readers" move between print, ebook, and audio depending on where they are and what they are doing. Audiobooks also improve access for people who have low vision, dyslexia, limited literacy, difficulty holding a book, or other barriers to reading print. Three Ways to Produce an Audiobook Laura and I discuss three possible paths: Do everything yourself. Learn the performance and technical sides of audiobook production, record the book, proof the audio, make corrections, edit, master, and upload the files. Narrate your own book and hire help. Perform the material yourself, then work with a proof-listener and audio engineer to create retail-ready files. Hire a professional narrator. Choose a narrator who understands your subject and can manage or support the production process. The right choice depends on your time, budget, access to professional help, production goals, and interest in learning the technical side of narration. Practice Before You Commit Laura recommends starting by reading a chapter aloud in a closet or another small, quiet room. Notice where you stumble, lose focus, rush, or misread a sentence. Then record three to five minutes on your phone and ask someone for honest feedback about your clarity, pacing, energy, and listener engagement. The goal is to find your natural voice. Do not imitate another narrator or slip into an announcer voice. Talk to the listener instead of sounding as though you are reading at them. Nonfiction can be educational and entertaining without sounding patronizing. Vocal stamina also varies. Laura recommends planning a short first session—perhaps 30 to 45 minutes of recording—before booking long blocks of studio time. Frequent breaks help protect both your voice and your body. Once production begins, try to record within a consistent period so your voice, recording environment, and delivery do not change noticeably between chapters. Proofing, Pickups, and Technical Specifications Every narrator makes mistakes. A proofer follows the manuscript while listening to the recording and identifies skipped text, incorrect words, unclear delivery, unwanted noises, and pronunciation problems. Those corrections are organized into a pickup packet so the narrator can rerecord them. Authors of medical or technical books should give the proof-listener and engineer a pronunciation guide. You know your subject, and a list of unfamiliar names and terms helps the production team distinguish a correct specialized pronunciation from an error. After the pickups are recorded, an engineer inserts the corrections, edits the files, and masters them to the chosen distributor's specifications. Laura strongly recommends hiring an engineer if you do not intend to make audio production a regular part of your work. Recording an entire book before learning that the files do not meet specifications can mean doing the work again. Plan Before Recording Before starting, confirm that you control the audio rights to the book. Review the manuscript and decide which front and back matter will be included. Write the opening and closing credits in advance, read chapter headings as they appear in the print book, and allow pauses that help listeners understand the structure. Audiobooks also need square cover art. Contact the original cover designer early rather than waiting until the narration is complete. If audiobook production is connected to your business, ask your tax professional whether any related costs may qualify as business expenses. Distribution and Marketing Laura encourages authors to research distributors instead of assuming there is only one choice. Options mentioned in the episode include ACX, Audiobooks Unleashed, and Author's Republic. Consider whether you want exclusive or wide distribution and whether library availability is important to you. When marketing, promote the book in all available formats. Add audiobook links to your website and newsletter, use QR codes at conferences and events, appear on relevant podcasts, share short audio samples, speak at libraries, and ask readers or colleagues for honest reviews. Authors may launch all formats together or stagger the audiobook release to create a second wave of attention. Laura's final message is simple: Get your books into audio. If you have written a book you care about, you can learn to narrate it, hire help for parts of the process, or work with a professional narrator. You have options. Write On: Advice for Pharmacist Authors with Dan Krinsky (Pharmacist Authors Series)
In this episode of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast, I talk with Ohio pharmacist Dan Krinsky about writing, co-authoring, and editing. This is Episode 22 in the Pharmacist Authors Series. Unlike most episodes in the series, our conversation does not focus on one specific book. Dan has written and edited many types of professional content, including continuing education and journal articles, newsletters, patient education materials, business proposals, and pharmacy reference resources. Dan first appeared on the podcast in Episode 133, when we discussed his pharmacy career and pharmacogenomics. This time, writing gets the spotlight. Dan shares practical advice for pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy professors who want to begin writing or expand their writing experience. Dan's contact information, website, and social media links Dan Krinsky BS, MS, RPh, FAPhA on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/dan-krinsky-bs-ms-rph-fapha-a8537a/ Dan's email dkrinsky@educare-4u.com EduCare4U, LLC website https://www.educare-4u.com PGx101, LLC on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/pgx101 The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast Episode 133 featuring Dan Krinsky (https://youtu.be/-DiLtL_JIDA?si=H0fPRa4p6BvkakdW) About Dan Krinsky B.S., M.S., R.Ph., FAPhA (July 2026) Dan is business owner, educator, entrepreneur and pharmacist who is passionate about advancing patient care and the pharmacy profession. He owns 2 businesses: EduCare4U, LLC, (focused on education and patient care) and PGx101, LLC (focused on pharmacogenomics education and practice implementation). Mr. Krinsky is currently a Professor at the LECOM School of Pharmacy, serving as a lecturer, committee member, and student advisor. He is a Fellow of the American Pharmacists Association and an active member of the Medication Management Special Interest Group. Other ventures include working with providers to optimize patients' drug therapy; professional writing; creation of certificate training programs, and new business development. Mr. Krinsky is Editor-in-Chief and Section Editor for the American Pharmacists Association publication 'Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs: An Interactive Approach to Self-Care.' Mr. Krinsky's areas of expertise include community pharmacy practice, drug information, patient counseling and education, OTCs, natural products, pharmacogenomics, and developing and implementing medication therapy and disease state management programs. His primary professional goal is to 'pay it forward', finding ways to make the profession better for the next generation of pharmacists. Questions and abbreviated answers from our conversation How did writing become part of your professional life? Dan's first major writing project was his master's thesis in pharmacokinetics. Writing did not come naturally at first, but he discovered that he enjoyed gathering information and turning it into something useful for an audience. How can someone decide whether writing is right for them? Start with a topic you care about. Identify the audience, look for gaps in available information, and find a mentor or support network. You do not need to work alone. Should new writers start small or go directly to writing a book? Dan recommends beginning with an article, newsletter, or another smaller project when possible. Smaller projects provide quicker feedback and help writers build skills and confidence. Someone who wants to start with a book should narrow the topic, identify the audience, create an outline, set deadlines, and seek feedback early. What has Dan written? His work includes newsletters, business proposals, patient advisory leaflets, consumer health information, journal and continuing education articles, and two co-authored point-of-care resources: the Natural Therapeutics Pocket Guide and the Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook. He has also contributed to multiple editions of APhA's Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs as an author and editor. How are writing, co-authoring, and editing different? An author creates the content. Co-authors share responsibility and need clear roles, flexibility, and communication. An editor improves accuracy, organization, clarity, and usefulness while protecting the author's voice. When should an author involve an editor? As early as possible. An editor can help shape the audience, scope, outline, organization, and flow before the author invests months in the wrong direction. Early feedback is usually easier to handle than dozens of changes at the end. How can someone find a useful topic? Pay attention to recurring patient questions, conversations, media claims, and gaps in health information. The final product does not need to be a book. It could be an article, handout, script, social media post, or educational program. What keeps people from starting? Dan identifies three common barriers: waiting to become "the expert," fear of criticism, and lack of structure. Know what you know, recognize what you do not know, and build a network that can help fill the gaps. How can pharmacists develop a writing habit? Schedule writing time, set specific goals, work backward from deadlines, and use an accountability partner. A detailed outline makes a large project feel more manageable. Where can beginners find legitimate writing opportunities? Consider professional associations, colleges of pharmacy, health systems, community pharmacies, continuing education companies, consumer health websites, and digital health companies. Build a portfolio with writing samples, areas of expertise, testimonials, and other communication experience. How long should someone give writing before deciding it is not for them? There is no single timeline. A newsletter article may take a month; a book may take 12 to 18 months. Set realistic deadlines for each project, start small, and give yourself time to learn. What is Dan's final advice for aspiring authors? Find a mentor, be patient, expect revisions, learn from feedback, and enjoy the process. Writing may not be the right path for everyone, but it can be a meaningful way to educate patients, serve the profession, and create new opportunities.
