Leading in the Grey: Exploring the Importance of Adaptive Leadership with Dr. Ashlee Saddler

How might Adaptive Leadership help team, school, and system leaders navigate today’s complex educational landscape? Dr. Ashlee Saddler joins Michelle Morris Jones on PEBC’s Phenomenal Teaching Podcast (https://www.pebc.org/podcasts/)to explore why Adaptive Leadership is essential in this moment. As Dr. Saddler shares, “Leadership is not found in certainty. It functions in the grey, where clarity is created, not assumed.” In this episode, Dr. Saddler highlights both bright spots and pressing challenges in educational leadership. As budgets tighten and leaders have fewer opportunities for support and professional growth, the cultivation of Adaptive Leadership skills has not kept pace with the increasing demands of leading through change. While acknowledging that leaders are stretched thin, Dr. Saddler offers a powerful call to action: lean into Adaptive Leadership by seeking mentors and community, staying grounded in core beliefs, making time for reflection, leading with authenticity, prioritizing wellness, and building the capacity of others. Dr. Ashlee Saddler serves as PEBC’s Senior Director of Leadership and as District Support Chief for the University of Virginia’s Partnership for Leaders in Education. She partners with transformational school and district leaders to strengthen instructional systems and ensure high-quality learning experiences for all students. With over 16 years of experience, she has served Aurora Public Schools as a director, principal, and assistant principal. Published 9 Jun 2026 · Transcript excerpt

[…] This idea that all teachers deserve opportunities to view the intricacies of teaching when they're not at the center of attention. Visiting each other's room allows you the luxury of driving in the slow lane, stopping to see the big picture as you take notes, Jot questions and think about children other than your own. Not only does the visitor learn, but the host as well. Annie, that's one of my favorite quotes. And you are such an amazing quote collector. And that quote from Shelley Harwain, I think sums up the lab experience so beautifully. It is driving in the slow lane. It's taking a look at all the things that are happening when you're not teaching. […]
