The Gallery of Attitudes: Which One Are You Hiding In?
Listen first. This week’s episode, above, tells the whole story. This page is the companion.
A Different Room
You are at a dinner with old friends, the kind you have known since before any of you had a job worth mentioning. Someone brings up a plan from years ago — the trip you never took, the language you meant to learn. You laugh it off. There is no time, you say, and everyone nods, because they know exactly what you mean.
But driving home, a smaller thought surfaces. You did not say there is no time. You said I do not know who would do it. As if the person who wanted that trip has been quietly reassigned, and the one left behind only knows how to do the job.
The Idea, in Brief
Simone de Beauvoir wrote The Ethics of Ambiguity in 1947, trying to answer a question the war had made urgent: what does a free person actually owe their own freedom, once no god or history hands them a script.
Her answer starts from a strange fact about being human. You are not born finished, the way a chair is finished the moment it leaves the workshop. You exist first, and become something only through what you choose, again and again. That is the bare bones of existentialism — the philosophy that says existence comes before any fixed essence.
Most people, Beauvoir noticed, find this unbearable and quietly opt out. She sketched a small gallery of the ways they do it. The sub-man refuses to choose at all and drifts through a flattened life. The serious man — the one this week’s episode is built around — chooses, but then hides inside the choice, treating a role and its values as solid ground handed down from outside, rather than something he keeps choosing. The job title becomes the alibi. As long as he is being good at it, he never has to answer for anything else.
She also names two other escapes worth knowing, because you may recognize yourself in them instead. The adventurer keeps choosing new projects, but only for the charge of conquering them — the goal barely matters, the winning does. The passionate man fastens onto one aim and treats it as absolute, as though it justified his whole existence rather than being a thing he decided to care about.
Against all of this, Beauvoir does not offer a cure so much as a practice: re-choosing your projects, deliberately, so you experience them as chosen rather than as facts about who you are. Freedom, in her account, is not a feeling of lightness. It is closer to an ongoing act of maintenance — no different from re-tightening a bolt that will always work loose again.
Why a Companion
Audio is good at the ache and the story. It is not built for a table you can come back to on a Tuesday, or a quote you want to sit with a second time, or a week of daily prompts you check off one at a time.
This page exists to slow the episode down into something usable — a way to actually run Beauvoir’s test on your own week, instead of just recognizing yourself in it and moving on.
Below, for paid subscribers:
* A concept map of Beauvoir’s four attitudes, each with a first move out
* Two passages from The Ethics of Ambiguity read closely, with the word most readers skim past
* Beauvoir’s practice of re-choosing set against this month’s most common advice: “set boundaries”
* A seven-day journal, one small prompt per day
* Where to go next in Beauvoir’s own work
* Three questions for the comments, and this month’s live masterclass
