[…] When we were in school in Rome, we read about these glorious demonstrations in our history books and dreamed about a time when water was diverted and flushed into the Colosseum in Circo Massimo. The battles were often bloodier than gladiatorial fights as they involved large numbers of fighters. and they were usually captured enemy slaves or criminals sentenced to death. Sometimes they'd be spared if they put in a good performance, sort of like Hollywood actors. In Rome, ancient monuments sat nonchalantly in the middle of fields, rivers, or crowded intersections of the city, magnificent dead beasts made of travertine, tuff, and bronze. […]
