[…] Now that is no longer the case. We know that this difference in the brain, in the word reading area of the brain can occur across the board in a child at any intellectual level. All children at all levels need to get the help they need. When decoding is effortful, reading becomes exhausting. then we need to start paying attention. That could be a sign that a child has dyslexia. What we really need to do is deep observation. I had a student who came to me who was diagnosed with dyslexia and also autism. And she had level two autism. And we found out after we worked together for about two months that she did not have dyslexia. […]
