Photography and Walking

About Photography and Walking

Photography and Walking is a podcast about how moving through the world changes the way we see it. Each episode explores photographers, artworks, and places where walking and seeing meet — from city streets to coastlines and blindfolded performances in Venice. Host Philippe Guillaume brings together the history of photography, storytelling, and observation to trace how images map experience step by step. — Opening and closing theme: Beat’em with Rhythm — Victor Natas (CC BY 4.0 / freesound.org) A production of Productions 3655 Inc.

The Time Between: Marlene Creates's Trees

Marlene Creates’s Larch, Spruce, Fir, Birch, Hand, Blast Hole Pond Road, Newfoundland consists of 154 photographs made over almost twenty years. Between 2007 and 2015, Creates photographed 77 trees in the boreal forest surrounding her home in Newfoundland, placing her hand against each trunk. Eleven years later, she returned to photograph the same trees again. In The Time Between, Philippe Guillaume considers what happened across that interval: black-and-white film became colour digital phot...

   Stop: Aoki’s FRUiTS

English Shoichi Aoki’s photographs for FRUiTS magazine transformed the street fashion of Harajuku, Tokyo, into an extraordinary visual archive. Frontal, colorful, and usually full-length, the portraits record people who had already styled and assembled their own public image. In Stop, Philippe Guillaume considers the encounter the photographs do not show: Aoki noticing someone, approaching that person, and asking them to participate. The episode moves between FRUiTS, relational aesthetics, an...

   Among Footsteps

Every city carries layers of history beneath its surface. In Roaming (2006), Carrie Mae Weems photographs herself walking and standing within monumental public spaces, usually with her back to the camera. Rather than asking us to look at her, the photographs invite us to look with her. In this episode of Photography and Walking, we explore how Roaming transforms walking into a way of reading history. We consider cities as palimpsests, places where traces of earlier lives remain within the pre...
