[…] And she said the ending should both be a surprise and inevitable. That sense of satisfaction, that surprise and inevitability creates what makes kids want to read those books over and over again. A story with heart that has emotional heft or resonance will make a reader reach for that book again and again. That's what you want, right? So some endings allow a child to continue the story in their minds by leaving them imaginative space. And a powerful ending evokes strong emotions, too. Whether it's joy or surprise, satisfaction or sense of wonder, crafting the perfect ending for your picture book is an art. […]
