Super Training
Today in Piney Ridge, Clover, Bev, Edgar, and Tutu threw a surprise hero party for Lilly, Dougie, and Otto. Parents, feel free to engage with your kiddos using some pf the prompts from below. How did Lilly and Dougie practice their aim? Throwing acorns in a basket and at a target What did Dougie make a target of? Puma the Mountain Lion Who did the count down for the obstacle course? Bev Who called the winner? Clover What was your favorite part of the training? Acorn toss, jump/climb through trees, hop across rocks, pass through bush’s? For an activity, Set up an obstacle course for your child. You can either take them to a park and make a course with the play equipment or set something up inside your home. This will help your child in many ways. Not only will it help them develop their gross and fine motor skills and their balance, but it will also help them cognitively. Doing obstacle courses can help them with memory by remembering multi step directions, problem-solving by figuring out how to get past an obstacle, and even motor planning by figuring out how they need to move their body. Make sure the cheer them on to build up their confidence and self esteem and support them when an obstacle is hard so they learn to emotionally regulate.

Hero Party
Today in Piney Ridge, Clover, Bev, Edgar, and Tutu threw a surprise hero party for Lilly, Dougie, and Otto. Parents, feel free to engage with your kiddos using some pf the prompts from below. What are acorn caps? The tops of acorns that attach them to the tree What did the friends use to make a banner? Slough Sedge (tall thick grass) made into strips and leaves How did Clover make paint? By crushing berries and boiling flower petals and adding sap What did Clover use to make pink paint? Pink petals (from a rhododendron) Why did the friends through a hero party? To say welcome home to their brave friends who helped a little bird get home What did the friends use as a bowl? Acorn Caps For an activity, let’s make our own watercolors. You are going to need leaves and/of flower petals, Alum powder, Soda Ash/Washing Soda, tall glass cups/mugs, small glass cup, strainer, and coffee filters. First take your leaves and rip them into little pieces or grind them up in a mortar and pestle. If you are using petals, remove all the petals from the flower(s). Next either boil your leaves/petals on the stove for 10-20 minutes or place you plant material in a mug and pour boiled water over them and let it steep like tea for 30 minutes. Afterwards pour you liquid through a strainer into a tall glass. Once the liquid has been poured into the glass, make sure it is still warm. Add 2 teaspoons of alum into the liquid and stir it until completely dissolved. In small cup add 1 teaspoon of the soda ash and add just enough hot water to dissolve it. While stirring the liquid with the alum, slowly pour in the soda ash mixture. It will bubble and effervesce like when you add baking soda to vinegar. If you used red leaves, the red liquid will turn dark green when the soda ash is added in. After the 2 liquids have been mixed, place a coffee filter in the strainer and place that over you smaller cup and then slowly pour your mixture through. After the liquid is done straining (may take an hour or so) place your coffee filter with the gooey “gunk” and place on a flat surface to dry (can take up to 48 hours). I put mine on a large plate to be able to move it around as needed. After it has fully dried, scrap off the remaining stuff off the filter and into a sealable container. This hardened stuff is called lake pigment, and it is what you will mix with a little bit of water to make your own water color. Make sure to mix the water with the lake pigment in a ramekin or some kind of small smooth glass container and using a smooth metal or glass object grind the powder into the water until smooth. And now you have made your own watercolor! https://linktr.ee/Pineyridgekidsanimalstories (https://linktr.ee/Pineyridgekidsanimalstories)

Carefully pick the mushroom by making sure the cap stays intact. Once you have found a few different ones, head back home. Once you’re home, carefully remove the stem of the mushroom from the cap and then grab different colors of construction paper. Place the cap of the mushroom down on a piece of construction paper, stem side down, and carefully cover the cap with a glass bowl and leave it alone for 12 to 24 hours. After the time has passed remove the bowl and the cap and you will see how the spores dropped from the cap and left a beautiful print on the paper. MAKE SURE TO DISCARD EVERY PIECE OF MUSHROOM AND DO NOT EAT ANY OF IT IF YOU ARE NOT 1000% WHAT KIND IT IS.

Like described in the story, go pick some flowers from your lawn or a public park. Dandelions, daisies, and clovers will most likely be the easiest to find. When you have the flower, using your nail make a little slit one or two finger widths from the bottom of the stem. Grab the next flower and slide its stem through the slit. Then make a slit in the second stem. Repeat this process until the crown is long enough to go around your child’s head. In the finally stem, make the slit slightly bigger, just enough to pass the blossom through, to close the loop. Carapace: The upper half of the shell Plastron: The lower half of the shell Why do we think Tutu moves slowly on land but fast in the water? The shell is heavy making it hard to move on land. In the water, everything floats so it feels lighter and that lets Tutu move much faster. For an activity, grab two plastic bowls, one large and one small. Fill the large one with water. Fill up the smaller one little less than halfway with something heavier, like rocks, rice, or even water. Put both containers on a flat surface and have your kiddo push the smaller one. Then put the smaller bowl into the larger bowl with water and have them push the little bowl around inside of the water. Have them feel how much easier it is to push it around in the water versus on land. Hide and Seek in The Dark
Today in Piney Ridge, Lilly meets with her new nighttime friends and play some hide and seek. The friends find out the story of the horned bird is real. Parents, feel free to engage with your kiddos using some pf the prompts from below. How did the friends find each other in the dark? Nocturnal creatures have good nighttime vision as well as having much better hearing and being more sensitive to movement. Which of the friends are predators? Lilly and Tek Lilly hunts small animals like mice, lizards, and small birds Tek hunts the same animals as Lilly but also slightly bigger animals like Lilly, Rico, and Posie. They even hunt skunks and rabbits. How does Tek fly silently? He has small, specialized fluffy feathers called down feathers that muffle sounds. His wings are extra big so he doesn’t have to flap as much as most birds and can even fly slower. Do you think the friends are good hiders? There fur are the right shades to blend in with bushes, trees, and shadows. They have a natural camouflage For an activity, right before bedtime, as it is getting darker, play a game of hide and seek without turning on lights. Have your child rely on their sense of hearing to find you. Or put on some perfume and they can use the scent to find you. Have your child put on pajamas that is a close match to your couches, pillows, or sheets and have them “blend in” like the friends. The running around and moving things around to make a hiding place would be good “big body play” that will help your child regulate their energy and emotions and get them ready for bed. Today in Piney Ridge, Lilly meets a stranger and is invited out for lunch. Parents, feel free to engage with your kiddos using some of the prompts from below. Where do you think Puma lives and sleeps? Very steep and rocky areas, with a lot of bush’s for them to hide They will sleep anywhere from on trees, under rock ledges, or even in caves. They will sleep somewhere new every few nights. What kind of food does Puma eat? Other animals smaller than them, deer’s are their favorite Why did Humpy return to area where he was born? Humpback/Pink salmon return to the area where they were born to lay eggs after 18 months in the ocean Does Bev live in her dam? No, beavers have “lodges” which is a pile of sticks, mud, and leaves that forms a dome where the beavers sleep and store food. Beavers build dams to create a pond where the water is still or slow moving so they can create their lodge safely. Why was Dougie opening a pinecone? To get to the seeds hidden with the hard outer folds (called scales) For an activity, find brown and tightly closed pinecones. Put them in a warm dry area until the cone dry’s out and open naturally. Once it is open, turn the cone upside down and shake it or tap it until the seeds fall out. You can also gently peel back the scales and push out the seeds with a finger. After you get the seeds out you can place them in a cup of water, any seeds that sink to the bottom can be planted. DO NOT EAT THESE SINCE MAY SPECIES OF PINE TREES CAN BE TOXIC To plant your seeds, place them a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag in the back of your fridge from 30 to 90 days. Afterwards place in small pot with potting mix and place the seed ¼” deep into the soil. Place the pot in a warm and sunny location and keep moist. A seedling will emerge within 2 to 4 weeks.
