A Vicar General is one of the bishop’s closest collaborators, appointed to assist in the governance of a diocese. But what does that actually mean in practice? We break down how the Vicar General helps the bishop manage day-to-day administration, coordinate pastoral work, and ensure that decisions and policies are carried out across the diocese.
You’ll also learn how this role fits within Church law, how much authority a Vicar General has, and how they differ from other diocesan officials. We’ll look at why this role exists and how it helps the bishop serve the growing needs of the local Church more effectively.
If you’ve ever wondered who helps the bishop manage a diocese behind the scenes, this episode will give you a clear and practical explanation.

S1E13 - How Priests Are Assigned to Parishes?
In this episode of The Catholic Why, we explore how priests are assigned to parishes and how these decisions are made within the Catholic Church.
Priest assignments are not random, nor are they made solely at the parish level. Instead, they involve discernment, consultation, and decision-making within the diocese, led by the bishop. We break down how factors such as pastoral needs, a priest’s experience, formation, and the needs of different communities all play a role in these assignments.
You’ll also learn about the role of the bishop, the diocesan personnel office (or equivalent structures), and how changes in assignments are communicated and implemented. We’ll look at why priests are sometimes moved, how transitions are handled, and how continuity of pastoral care is maintained for parish communities.
If you’ve ever wondered why a familiar priest is reassigned or how a new priest arrives at your parish, this episode will help you understand the process behind it.

S1E12 - What Is a Parish Council?
In this episode of The Catholic Why, we explore what a Parish Council is and how it supports the life and mission of a local Catholic parish.
A Parish Council is a group of parishioners who work alongside the parish priest to help guide pastoral planning, community initiatives, and the overall direction of parish life. But it is not a governing board in the corporate sense—its role is primarily advisory, rooted in collaboration and discernment.
We break down how Parish Councils are formed, who serves on them, what they actually do in practice, and how they help ensure the parish responds to the needs of its community while staying aligned with the mission of the wider Church.
You’ll also learn how Parish Councils relate to finance councils, why they matter for active parish life, and how they help foster shared responsibility among clergy and laypeople.
If you’ve ever wondered how decisions are made in your local parish beyond the priest, this episode will give you a clear and practical understanding.
