Pinterest Stopped Showing Your Best Ad to Everyone | Laura Rike
Pinterest just told us in plain words that they stopped showing your best ad to everyone. A white paper from their own ads team describes a system that picks a different version of your ad for each person who sees it and quietly docks any version that hogs the screen. Laura Rike walks through what it grades, why your tall pin now starts with a handicap, and what to hand Pinterest instead.
Key Takeaways:
Pinterest Picks a Version Per Person: The old model gave everyone the same winning pin. Now the system reads who's walking in, what they searched, and what device they're on, then picks the version most likely to land.
Tall Pins Start With a Handicap: A tall pin shoves three others off the screen, and Pinterest now counts what those three lost. Tall can still win, it just has to earn the space.
The System Wants Choices: Three to five images, two to three titles, both layouts if your offer fits both. And they have to be genuinely different. Same photo with a new font is the same pin.
Five to Seven Beats Forty: Gains flatten after the first handful, so 40 versions on day one is mostly paying for storage. Pinterest says AI image generators are the reason this system exists.
This Paper Covers Ads Only: Organic runs on a different system. Laura flags her organic read as a guess: 2:3 as home base, several genuinely different pins per page, main thing big and obvious.

Pinterest Holiday Pins: Fix the Page Before You Make New Ones | Laura Rike
Everybody asks when to publish a holiday pin. Almost nobody asks where it lands. Your best pin from last December is still ranking and still getting saved, and it may point at a page arguing for a year that already ended. Laura covers the half of holiday Pinterest nobody talks about.
Key Takeaways:
Your Landing Page Is Part of What Pinterest Reads: Two papers from Pinterest's engineers list link-based text alongside pin titles, board names, and engaged searches. Update the page, update the pin's file.
Sort by Outbound Clicks: Impressions tell you a pin got shown. An outbound click tells you somebody wanted what was behind it enough to leave Pinterest. Sort last season by that number.
Update the Page You Have: For a gift guide or seasonal roundup, keep the old URL. It holds the rankings and saved pins, and a new URL starts at zero on both. If someone searching next November would still be happy to land there, it's evergreen wearing a year by accident.
Leave the URL, the Pin, and the Board Alone: Rewrite the slug for the new year and every pin pointing there aims at a 404. An old year in a URL is ugly and harmless. A broken URL is neither.
Order of Operations: Take last season's top seven to ten by outbound clicks and group by destination. They'll collapse into three to five pages. Fix the title, meta description, the year in the body copy, and dead products. Then stop.

Pinterest's 28-Day Rule: Why Old Pins Stop Working | Laura Rike
You have a pin that used to bring 40,000 monthly views. Now it brings 400. You didn't break anything. Old pins with years of engagement kept outranking newer, more relevant ones, so Pinterest built a system called Pin Equalizer to fix it. Laura Rike breaks down the 28-day audition every new pin now gets, and why your 2022 winner isn't coming back on its own.
Key Takeaways:
Your New Pin Gets an Automatic Audition: Pinterest built separate indexes for fresh content and guaranteed fresh candidates enter ranking every time. No fixed percentage of slots is reserved, so making the stage still comes down to ranking.
The Model Stopped Reading the Scoreboard: During training, Pinterest randomly hides a pin's engagement history from the model. It has to guess from the image, text, relevance, and intent, so your design and copy carry more weight than they did three years ago.
Relevance Gates Your Head Start: Fresh pins get a confidence bonus, and on search it gets multiplied by the relevance score. A clever title multiplies your head start by a small number. Say the thing the person typed.
28 Days Is the Whole Window: A pin graduates when it earns enough positive engagement inside 28 days, and pins that burn through the budget get retired. Nothing in the paper describes a way back in, so repinning an old winner does nothing.
The Fix Is a Fresh Pin for That URL: Recreate what worked rather than recycling the pin. Your account's track record seeds Pinterest's guess before the new pin earns a single impression.
