   32: An Ayinger S1 Finale

   Season 1 of Pints of View reaches its grand, foamy finale with a beer that feels like it has arrived wearing lederhosen and carrying centuries of brewing pride. Pete and Cliff pour Ayinger, one of Bavaria’s great traditional breweries, and raise a glass to a first season that has somehow included beer, history, football, AI, space toilets, Dad Joke-Offs, listener nonsense, cheese rolling, strange news, Superfight and more opinions than either host can reasonably defend. Ayinger gives the lads a perfect finale beer: classic, respected, deeply Bavarian and rooted in the kind of village brewing tradition that makes modern craft beer look like it has just discovered fonts. Whether it is Ayinger Lager Hell, Bräuweisse, Jahrhundert Bier, Celebrator Doppelbock or another bottle from the range, this is beer with heritage: malt, hops, tradition and the quiet confidence of a brewery that does not need a neon can design to be taken seriously. The main Top 10 this week is a big one: Top 10 Sci-Fi Shows of All Time. Pete and Cliff enter hyperspace to debate the greatest science-fiction TV series ever made. Is Black Mirror really sci-fi, or just the evening news with better lighting? And how long can Cliff talk about space before Pete brings it back to Lancashire? The episode also includes World Cup chat, as Pete and Cliff look at the latest tournament drama, surprise exits, knockout tension, national heartbreak and the strange collective madness that only a World Cup can create. There is also a wider discussion on playing sport in adverse conditions: rain, heat, mud, snow, wind, frozen pitches, rock-hard school fields, tropical humidity and the unique British belief that if children are not slightly blue by half-time, PE has failed. Then Hoppy to Hear From You returns, with more listener letters, complaints, corrections, beer suggestions and possibly messages from people who should not be allowed near a keyboard after two pints. And because this is the Season 1 finale, Superfight! returns as well — the ridiculous battle game where logic goes for a lie down and Pete and Cliff argue over whether a wizard with a jetpack could defeat a shark with a law degree. It is the end of Season 1 — but not the end of the nonsense.    30: Moretti's Finest Hour

   Episode 30 opens with a beer that brings a bit of Italian warmth to the table: Birra Moretti. First brewed in Udine, in Italy’s Friuli region, by Luigi Moretti’s “beer and ice factory,” Moretti has grown into one of the most recognisable Italian beer brands in the world. The official Moretti history places its origins in Udine and links the brand to the city’s commercial and craft traditions during the era of Italian unification. Pete and Cliff get into the flavour, the label, the moustached man, and the question that always follows a big international lager: is this a genuinely classic beer, a holiday beer, or simply the sort of dependable pint that works best with pizza, sunshine and shouting at football? Then comes one of the most serious Top 10s the show has attempted: wars by number of casualties. It is a subject that demands a different tone from the usual lists. The lads look at why these figures are so difficult to compare, how civilian deaths, famine, disease, displacement and missing records complicate every estimate, and why “ranking” wars can feel uncomfortable even when the purpose is historical understanding. Our World in Data notes that war deaths are often counted differently depending on whether a source includes combatants only, civilians, famine, disease or indirect deaths; it also stresses that the human cost of war goes far beyond battlefield deaths.
