When Faith Becomes Control: Gaslighting, Shame, and Red Flags

How do red flags become so easy to explain away? Heather and Emily unpack Maternal Instinct and the documentary about Mica Miller’s death, exploring the deception, manipulation, and relationship warning signs that left them yelling at the TV. Their conversation gets personal as they connect religious trauma, gaslighting, and coercive control with their own experiences of shame, obedience, and finding their voice. Spoilers throughout. Includes explicit language and discussion of murder, domestic abuse, sexual coercion, and suicide. What You’ll Learn: The warning signs Heather and Emily identify in Taylor Parker’s fabricated pregnancy and escalating lies. How isolation, surveillance, and emotional manipulation can become patterns of coercive control. Why religious shame and pressure to obey can make harmful relationships harder to question. How the hosts’ experiences shape their reactions to Mica Miller’s story. Why keeping your faith and questioning organized religion can be part of the same personal journey. I Quit My Job After 18 Years | Workplace Burnout, Toxic Bosses & Starting Over

Emily quit her job. Finally. After 18 years at the same orthodontic practice, she walked away from the place that had become her career, her stress spiral, her identity, and, eventually, the thing that was stealing her peace. In this episode of Pissy But Pretty, Heather and Emily talk about workplace burnout, toxic management, being underpaid and underappreciated, and the emotional breaking point that finally pushed Emily to leave. She shares how she went from receptionist to billing to HR and practice manager, all while training herself, cleaning up years of someone else’s mess, handling employee crises, managing facilities, dealing with fire safety problems, and trying to keep a business running without the trust, respect, or support she needed. And because this is Pissy But Pretty, there are also detours through Nelly at the Wisconsin State Fair, orthodontic office chaos, eyebrows as “the nipples of the face,” panic wakeups, bad bosses, mean doctors, friendship, motherhood, and the freedom that comes when a woman finally says, “I don’t care anymore.” In this episode, Heather and Emily talk about: Why Emily finally quit after 18 years at the same job How workplace loyalty can turn into burnout What happens when you are promoted but not trained or supported Why trust and respect can matter more than money The difference between being frustrated and being ignored How toxic workplace dynamics affect your sleep, family, health, and identity Why leaving can be the healthiest choice, even when it is scary Chapters [00:00] - Nelly, the Wisconsin State Fair, and why Gen X now sees concerts at fairs [04:45] - Emily reveals she quit her job [08:30] - How 18 years at one orthodontic practice began [13:20] - When the job started becoming ethically uncomfortable [19:00] - Moving from billing into HR and practice management [26:15] - Fire safety, facilities problems, and cleaning up someone else’s mess [34:40] - Responsibility without real support [43:30] - Communication problems, broken trust, and workplace gaslighting [52:15] - The final straw that made Emily quit [59:30] - Choosing family, peace, and self-respect [1:05:45] - What it means when a woman finally says, “I don’t care anymore” Connect with Pissy But Pretty Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pissybutpretty (https://www.facebook.com/pissybutpretty) Instagram: @pissybutpretty YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN7jjd75MT4J2gmZ8LK34zg (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN7jjd75MT4J2gmZ8LK34zg) For inquiries and collaborations: hello@pissybutpretty.com (mailto:hello@pissybutpretty.com) Subscribe, follow, and join the conversation. After Losing 250 Pounds: The Truth About Skin Removal, Recovery, and Body Image

What really happens after you lose 250 pounds and finally undergo skin removal surgery? In this episode of Pissy But Pretty, Heather shares the honest, uncomfortable, and occasionally unhinged truth about recovering from abdominal skin removal surgery after once weighing 400 pounds. She and Emily talk about the physical healing process, the emotional toll of being forced to slow down, and the complicated relationship women can have with body image and cosmetic surgery. The conversation also explores whether changing your appearance can improve your self-worth, how beauty standards affect women in midlife, and why sitting alone with your thoughts can sometimes feel harder than physical pain. As always, Heather and Emily approach emotional recovery and midlife reinvention through humor-infused healing, personal stories, tangents, and plenty of cuss words. What You’ll Learn What recovery from excess skin removal surgery can really feel like after major weight loss Why the emotional side of surgery may be harder than the physical pain How staying constantly busy can prevent you from processing grief, stress, and major life changes How Heather and Emily decide which cosmetic procedures feel empowering and which ones go too far Why body image, aging, self-acceptance, and personal transformation rarely have simple answers Episode Highlights 02:35 – Heather reveals that she underwent abdominal skin removal surgery after losing 250 pounds 06:18 – What an inverted-T skin removal procedure involves and why additional surgeries are planned 10:42 – Returning to work earlier than recommended and discovering the limits of a high pain tolerance 14:16 – Why being forced to sit still triggered boredom, grief, and unexpected emotional breakdowns 19:04 – Can plastic surgery improve self-confidence, or does the goalpost keep moving? 25:31 – Botox, fillers, facelifts, and the fear of no longer looking like yourself 31:48 – A nostalgic birthday trip to the mall and the return of early-2000s fashion 40:12 – How beauty standards, celebrity culture, and pressure to perform can shape unhealthy choices 44:27 – Busybody versus homebody and why some people struggle to spend time alone Tools, Frameworks, or Strategies Mentioned Humor-Infused Healing Heather and Emily use candid conversation, lived experience, and irreverent humor to discuss body image, grief, emotional recovery, and women’s mental health without pretending that healing is neat or predictable. Midlife Reinvention The episode examines what it means to change your body and rebuild your relationship with yourself during midlife. That process can include surgery, self-reflection, accepting help, and learning how to slow down. Emotional Recovery Through Realness Physical recovery created unexpected space for Heather to process loss, family illness, and difficult memories. Her experience shows how emotional resilience sometimes begins when distraction is no longer available. Closing Insight Changing your body can be part of healing, but recovery also requires learning how to live with your thoughts, your history, and the person you are becoming.
