Playbook Optional with Daniel Gotera explores what happens when life doesn’t go according to plan. Through personal stories and candid conversations, Daniel goes beyond the scoreboard to talk sports, life after TV, fatherhood, health, career reinvention and the unexpected turns that shape who we become.
PO Special Episode: Learning to Live Without Resentment
Sometimes moving forward is harder than it sounds.
In this special edition of Playbook Optional, I share a few thoughts from my morning walk about losing a job I loved, dealing with resentment, and trying to understand where life is taking me.
The past couple of years have brought unexpected career changes, health challenges, and a new chapter working for myself. And while I believe God has a plan, that doesn't mean it's always easy to let go of the past.
A short, unscripted conversation about faith, family, frustration, and learning to move forward.

Ep 12: Northwestern's New Ryan Field Is Incredible…But Feels Very Weird.
Northwestern's new Ryan Field is an architectural masterpiece. But after attending homecoming, I walked away wondering something I never expected:
What happened to the Northwestern I grew up loving?
In this episode of Playbook Optional, I return to Evanston for my 20th college reunion and my dad's 50th, bringing three generations of family history and Northwestern tradition along for the ride.
The stadium is beautiful. The sight lines are incredible. But something felt missing.
We talk about the marching band's changing role, the loss of familiar game-day traditions, the manufactured atmosphere inside the stadium, and how NIL and the business of modern college football are changing the identity of universities like Northwestern.
I'm not against progress. I'm not against winning. But does everything that made a school special have to disappear in the process?
This isn't just about a football stadium. It's about tradition, loyalty, family, and what happens when the game changes around you.

Ep 11: Texans Finally Win… But the White Sox Broke Me
The Texans finally have something to celebrate!
After an 0-4 start, Houston takes care of business against Tennessee, and Daniel breaks down C.J. Stroud's performance, the defense's resurgence, and the addition of Marvin Harrison Jr.
But while the Texans are giving him hope, the Chicago White Sox have completely broken him. After blowing a 2-0 ALDS lead against Cleveland, Daniel unloads on the playoff collapse, the Guardians, and the emotional exhaustion of being a diehard sports fan.
Plus, a quick recap of Northwestern's homecoming weekend.
Real Life. Real Talk.

Episode 10: The Texans Drop to 0-4 as Defense Falls Apart Again
Texans fall to the Cowboys 34-30 despite CJ Stroud throwing for 347 yards and two touchdowns. The offense finally showed some life, Nico Collins was back making plays, but the defense once again couldn't finish the job.
In Episode 10 of Playbook Optional, Daniel breaks down what's gone wrong with a defense that was supposed to carry this team, the penalties and special teams mistakes that keep piling up, and why the pressure is starting to fall on DeMeco Ryans.
And somehow, at 0-4, Daniel still thinks this thing can be fixed.
Delusional? Maybe. 😂 But with Tennessee up next, it's time to find out.

Episode 9: White Sox vs. Astros: An Extremely Biased Playoff Preview
October baseball is here, and somehow Daniel's Chicago White Sox are once again matched up with the Houston Astros.
For a lifelong Sox fan who lives in Houston, this is pretty much the one playoff matchup he never wants to see. 😂 The history is there — the 2005 World Series, the 2021 ALDS and now another postseason meeting in 2026.
In this special playoff edition of Playbook Optional, Daniel give Astros fans an admittedly biased scouting report on a young White Sox team that few expected to be playing October baseball. Chicago brings plenty of power and an offense capable of putting runs on the board, but there are serious questions about the starting rotation, bullpen management and whether a roster loaded with rookies is ready for the postseason stage.
Daniel also explains why his game plan for Yordan Alvarez is incredibly simple: Don't pitch to him. Ever.
Plus, there's the story of the last time these teams met in the playoffs — when Daniel was covering the series for KHOU 11 and decided he was better off watching the games from his car instead of the press box because he couldn't trust himself to hide his White Sox fandom.
He knows the Astros have the postseason experience. He knows Houston has been a nightmare matchup for Chicago. And he knows he may regret saying this very soon.
But he's riding with his guys.

Episode 8: The Texans Are 0–3… AGAIN. What the Hell Is Going On?
The Houston Texans are 0–3. Again.
After a 19–17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Daniel Gotera tries to figure out how a team with this much talent has found itself in the exact same hole for the second straight season.
Is C.J. Stroud really the problem? Is the offensive line holding everything back? At what point does the responsibility fall on the coaching staff to stop playing it safe and start building an offense around the personnel it actually has?
Daniel explains why he believes Stroud has actually played relatively well, why the Texans desperately need more creativity and tempo on offense, and why DeMeco Ryans and his staff may need to change their approach before this season gets away from them.
Plus, Will Anderson continues to look like an absolute force, the defense forced three turnovers, and DeMeco's postgame comment that “a house divided cannot stand” certainly got Daniel's attention.

Episode 7: Texans Lose & Panic Attacks Suck
In Episode 7 of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera starts with football — breaking down the Texans’ 36–31 loss to Buffalo, the reaction surrounding C.J. Stroud, what went wrong and why he’s not ready to panic about the season just yet.
Then the episode takes a very different turn.
While driving back from a work trip, Daniel experienced his first severe panic attack in more than a year. It came completely out of nowhere — a sudden surge through his body, shaking, a racing heart and the terrifying realization that he was behind the wheel of a car while it was happening.
He talks candidly about getting off the highway, trying to regain control, eventually making it to the airport and spending nearly 45 minutes alone in a meditation room trying to get his nervous system to settle down.
It’s an episode about two very different kinds of adversity.
One is football.
The other is a reminder that progress isn't always a straight line.

Episode 6: Texans Are Primed For Super Bowl Run
The conversation has changed with the Texans.
Winning the AFC South isn't enough anymore. The Texans have assembled a roster capable of competing with anyone in the AFC — and now the question is whether they can finally break through and make a legitimate Super Bowl run.
In Episode 6 of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera is joined by 95.7 The Fan host and reporter Brandon Scott for a full preview of the 2026 season.
They break down the expectations surrounding C.J. Stroud, what could be a dominant Texans defense, the rebuilt offensive line, the AFC South, the pressure facing this team and the biggest things that could stand between Houston and a deep playoff run. Brandon also explains why he sees the Texans as the most complete team in the division — and a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
Daniel also puts his prediction on the record:
AFC Championship Game or bust.
After a few heavier conversations on Playbook Optional, this one is all football.

Episode 5: Who Are You When the Game is Taken From You? A Conversation with Ben Miller
In Episode 5 of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera sits down with Ben Miller, a former Stratford High School football player whose life changed in an instant when he suffered a stroke during a game as a teenager. Ben survived the stroke and began fighting his way back — believing football was still waiting for him on the other side. Then doctors told him he could never play contact sports again.
That was only the beginning.
Ben opens up about losing his identity as an athlete, struggling with alcohol and addiction, taking multiple medical leaves from Northwestern, going to rehab, and searching for ways to heal both physically and mentally.
He also shares the remarkable road back — including traveling overseas for stroke rehabilitation, running again for the first time in five years, reconnecting with his Bhutanese heritage and discovering a spiritual side of himself he never expected.
Today, Ben is an author with a very different perspective on the question that followed him for years:
Why me?
His answer now?
“Not ‘why me?’ But ‘it is me.’”
This is a conversation about football, identity, addiction, recovery, family, spirituality and learning to build a life you never planned for.
Because sometimes the biggest comeback has nothing to do with getting back in the game.

Episode 4: When My Health Fell Apart
I thought I was healthy. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, everything started to fall apart.
In Episode 4 of Playbook Optional, I tell the most personal part of my story so far — my health journey.
It started with physical stress I couldn't explain. Then came an AFib episode that landed me in the hospital, panic attacks, multiple trips to the ER, countless doctors and tests, vitamin deficiencies, significant weight loss and a body that suddenly didn't feel like my own.
At the same time, life wasn't slowing down. I was dealing with enormous stress at work and the deaths of three people I loved within a matter of months. Eventually, I learned that I was living with Crohn's disease — something I never knew I had — and began the long process of trying to rebuild my health.
I talk about the panic attacks. The isolation. What it was like losing 35 pounds. The toll it took on my wife and kids. The people who helped pull me through it. And where I am today as my body continues to recover.
This isn't a medical advice episode. It's simply my story — and a reminder of how quickly the life you thought you had planned can change.
Games have playbooks. Life doesn't.

Episode 3: AC/DC With My Son + Is College Football Broken?
On Episode 3 of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera talks about an unforgettable night taking his 9-year-old son to see AC/DC — on a school night, no less — and why sharing the music he grew up loving with his son meant so much more than just going to a concert.
Then it’s time for college football.
With another season underway, Daniel explains why a sport he once couldn’t get enough of just doesn’t feel the same anymore. From NIL and the growing financial gap between programs to the reality facing schools like his alma mater Northwestern, has college football reached a point where too many teams are starting the season with virtually no realistic path to a championship?
Plus, a little White Sox/Astros talk, life as a sports fan when you’re no longer working in sports TV, and why some of the best moments have nothing to do with the final score.
Games have playbooks. Life doesn’t.

Episode 2: Butch Alsandor - TV Life, Covering Houston Sports, Loss & Moving Forward
On Episode 2 of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera sits down with longtime Houston television personality and former KHOU 11 Sports Director Butch Alsandor for a conversation that goes from funny stories inside the TV newsroom to one of the most difficult chapters of Butch's life.
Butch shares stories from his years in television, what life was really like behind the scenes, the people and moments that shaped his career, and some memories Daniel and Butch share from their time working together.
But the conversation goes far beyond television.
Butch opens up about the unexpected loss of his son, the impact it had on him and his family, and the strength, faith and perspective it has taken to continue moving forward.
There are laughs. There are stories. And there are moments that get very real.
That's what Playbook Optional is all about.
Games have playbooks. Life doesn't.
Real Life. Real Talk.

Episode 1: When the Playbook Changes
What happens when the life you planned suddenly isn't the life you're living anymore?
In the first episode of Playbook Optional, Daniel Gotera turns the microphone on himself. He looks back at the career he dreamed about as a kid, his years in sports television at KHOU 11 in Houston, Texas, the unexpected end of that chapter, the disaster that became his next job...and the uncertainty that came with figuring out what was next.
Daniel also opens up about fatherhood, health, identity, career reinvention and why some of life's biggest changes have taught him that having the perfect plan might be overrated.
It's the story behind Playbook Optional — and the beginning of conversations about sports, life and everything that happens when the playbook gets thrown out.
