To do so, the pair speaks with a leading expert in the field about their work on specific energy topics—the big trends, the challenges, and the successes. The podcast uses conversation to explore a broad range of subject matter, from sustainable aviation fuels to building efficiency to distributed electricity generation to daily micromobility.

Happy Spring (or Happy Autumn for our Southern Hemisphere listeners) from Plugged In, your favorite podcast from Guidehouse Insights that goes deep into interesting and emerging sustainability topics.
After a few episodes focusing on power consumption and resource use and how it can affect the grid, you might have the idea that end users of electricity are just that: the end of the chain. But, new technology is allowing buildings to be used as assets for the power grid making them ore reliable and sustainable. To chat about all that, we brought back our most fiery guest, Jared Feuer! Jared is a Research and Analysis Consultant with the Guidehouse Insights Built Environment Team, and was also our star guest all the way back from Episode 12!
Join in as we chat about how big of a fan Jared is of Plugged In. Then we talk more spicy topics, like grid modernization practices, utility involvement in building to grid (B2G) expansion, and which markets are the hot spots for new technologies. We talk the difference between net metering and net billing, and how that affects solar panel expansions. We also talk our favorite alternative milks, documentaries we’ve been watching, and how all of these innovations come back to California sooner or later.

Episode 24 – It’s Always Sunny in Retail Rates Land
It’s Episode 24 of Plugged In, the Guidehouse Insights podcast about interesting and emerging sustainability technology, and not the show starring Kiefer Sutherland.
It’s the dead of winter for many of the listeners of Plugged In, so we brought Ryan Walden, who works with solar energy, to bring some sunshine and warmth to your feed. Ryan is a Managing Consultant on the Integrated Modeling team, where he supports community solar developers, investors, utilities, and other clients across the United States.
We have Ryan on to talk about the most important sustainability topic of all: his favorite pizza in Chicago. Then we get on to less contentious topics like how community solar programs work, where they can have the most impact, and how low to moderate income communities can benefit from community solar. We learn how modeling teams like Ryan’s help a solar developer and we talk about what book really got Ryan into the energy space. And, like any good Plugged In episode, we chat about utility bills!

Episode 23 - Sharing is Caring…and Heating
Happy 2025 to the many adoring fans of Plugged In, the Guidehouse Insights podcast where we get deep into sustainability topics and how they can be where you least expect.
This month we have a first for Plugged In, a returning guest! We brought Grant Samms back on to talk about his report “Waste Heat Recovery for Data Centers”. Grant is a Research Analyst with Guidehouse Insights focusing on energy use and efficiency, smart city development, and the human/built environment interface. If you haven’t listened to his previous appearance in Episode 3, give it a listen!
We have Grant on to chat about an emerging market with potential for massive benefits: waste heat from data centers. The server rooms for everything you do with a computer, from shop to generate AI images, create a lot of heat. With constant and predictable heat, what can a data center operator do with it? They can heat a building, heat water, and maybe even help with animal farming. With the explosive growth of data centers globally, this waste product might become a major opportunity.
