«Иллюзия света была его Богом, и не было художника, равного ему в достижении этого чуда живописи» (И. Е. Репин). Куинджи неоднократно называли художником света, его работы изумляли и вызывали настоящий ажиотаж. В 1880 году люди выстраивались в километровую очередь, чтобы увидеть его знаменитое полотно «Лунная ночь на Днепре». По словам Репина, многие после просмотра картины плакали. Невероятная передача света и цвета в его картинах вызывала бурю эмоций – от восхищения до обвинения завистников в том, что он прятал за картинами дополнительные источники света. «Омская» картина – четвертый авторский вариант-повторение знаменитого полотна «Лунная ночь на Днепре», и после тридцатилетнего перерыва она вновь возвращается к зрителям.
