[…] The way I think about it is, you know, the early 1940s, the World War II, mobilization of the U.S. and the allies is the most transformative churn, arguably, of the whole century of lived infrastructure, of economy, and of course, of political fates. We might take for granted that the US has a big military and a big defense industry, but it did not. In fact, after World War One, there was major controversies about defense industry corruption. There were congressional committees which warned of these merchants of death that would be corrupting American life. I vaguely remember reading at one point, Kurt Vonnegut writing about how it used to be a sort of a point of pride in the United States that the military was so small, right, compared to European militaries of the age.
