Thanks to those who joined us live for our conversation about adaptations, and for those joining us now via recorded podcast. We begin by discussing the recent trailer for The Magician’s Nephew, directed by Greta Gerwig, and some of the discourse around it. Then we zoom out: what makes a successful adaptation? How important is faithfulness to the source material? What are some of our favorite and least favorite adaptations? And how are the gospels themselves adaptations for different audiences.
Here’s the article MaryAnn referenced (https://greydanus.substack.com/p/those-books-created-me-greta-gerwig) about a fellow Substacker and his experience listening to Greta Gerwig reflect with Stephen Colbert on the impact C.S. Lewis’s novels had on her as a child.

PCPH - Ted Lasso S4.10 - “Being Alive”
And that’s a wrap! Lots to love in the finale of season four of Ted Lasso. Ed shares how the episode was like a Thanksgiving meal, we dig into what worked and didn’t about the Zelda storyline, and ponder leadership the Richmond Way. We also list our favorite scenes that packed an emotional punch, and some predictions/hopes for next season.
Regarding the episode title, here’s MaryAnn’s favorite rendition of “Being Alive” from Company (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBBPKedba5o&list=RDeBBPKedba5o&start_radio=1). Hear any connections between the song’s themes and Rebecca and Matthijs?
And here is Brandi Carlisle’s stunning rendition (https://youtu.be/ZtQcjhdtZ9Q?si=Sye9MFftQasGJUKT) of the theme that opened the episode…
And how about the twins’ sharing The Parting Glass (https://youtu.be/qGGWVhKq_Rw?si=edKuoft2E8g_k-f1)…
Coming up: we talk pop culture adaptations Monday October 19 at 1 p.m., and we keep things light as the midterms approach with a discussion of politics in pop culture, Monday October 26 at 1 p.m. And in November: the HBO series Lanterns starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre.
