Penn State - It's the Hope that Kills you
This episode is a raw, frustrated post-mortem of Penn State football’s overtime collapse to Oregon. The hosts describe the game as another heartbreaking, familiar script: senior QB Drew Allar (five-star, once-touted NFL prospect) throwing a game-ending interception in double OT. They recall Penn State’s futility in big games under head coach James Franklin, highlighting his own admission post-game that “it’s not a narrative anymore—it’s factual evidence” that PSU can’t beat elite opponents.
Game breakdown:
At halftime Penn State had just 69 yards of offense, trailing 17–3 entering the 4th.
A brief surge (Allar to Ross TD) gave fans false hope, only to be crushed in overtime.
Oregon’s decisive interception silenced Beaver Stadium’s 111,000+ crowd instantly.
Hosts argue PSU should have risked a 2-point conversion at the end of regulation with momentum and a gassed Ducks defense.
Recurring themes:
Emotional roller coaster for fans: crushed hope, depression, jokes about “just live in the gutter.”
Beaver Stadium atmosphere: loudest moments evaporated after Oregon’s 17–3 lead, rowdy student section throwing objects, parking lot chaos, overpriced tickets ($400 face value, $1000 resale).
Fans note Oregon players taunting the student section, Dan Lanning’s fiery style, and Oregon’s opportunism in big moments.
Statistical issues:
Penn State’s offense under Allar is stagnant in marquee games:
Last 10 games vs ranked opponents: 3–7 record, no top-6 wins.
Allar averages: 163 yds, 1 TD, 0.5 INT.
Recent passing yard totals: 137, 135, 170, 127.
Defense “bend don’t break”: only 1 TFL vs Oregon, no sacks, no turnovers—yet allowed just 17 points in regulation.
Hosts lament squandered elite defense because of broken offense.
Top 5 most overrated/disappointing players (2024):
5. Zane Durant – invisible at DT.
4. DDS (DE) – hyped as best in CFB, but no sacks since Week 1.
3. Entire LB corps (or TE Deacon Hill) – repeatedly gashed.
2. Nick Singleton – overshadowed by Kaytron Allen, misused with only 12 carries.
Drew Allar – regression, plummeting NFL draft stock, senior year decision seen as catastrophic.
Coaching criticisms:
Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki on the hot seat; play-calling questioned, lack of adjustments, refusal to feature Allen despite 7 YPC.
James Franklin’s career record vs top-5: 1–21. Hosts claim PSU is stuck in “purgatory”—good enough to make playoffs, never elite enough to win titles.
Franklin labeled as a coach who sells hope but can’t deliver (“great, not elite”).
Fans debate future: fire Franklin (risk becoming Nebraska/Iowa) vs keep him (permanent 10–2 ceiling).
Bigger picture:
NIL: Allar reportedly making $2.5M, softening sympathy for his struggles.
Transfer portal loyalty could collapse if Franklin is fired.
Alternatives thrown around (half-joking): Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, John Gruden.
Concern PSU is “just happy to be at the table” (making playoffs, generating money) rather than pushing to be national champions.
Fan perspective:
Hosts share personal pain: somber drive home, skipping Twitter for mental health, joking about “insanity” of expecting different results.
Anecdotes: beer prices ($15), stadium silence after the pick, Oregon fans subdued but smug.
Larger despair: “We are Iowa now”—elite defense, no QB.
Looking forward:
Next stretch: UCLA (in turmoil after firing coordinators), Northwestern, Iowa, Ohio State, Indiana.
Must go at least 2–1 vs Iowa/OSU/Indiana or Franklin’s seat burns.
Suggest easing in backup QB Grunkmeyer since offense already lacks rhythm.
Hosts admit season feels like a “crossroads” for both Penn State’s trajectory and their own fan sanity.
Closing sentiment:
Penn State football under Franklin = purgatory: strong rosters, elite defenses, NFL-caliber talent, but chronic offensive collapse, wasted potential, and failure in biggest moments. Fans are left deflated, questioning whether PSU is content being “good, not great,” forever chasing elite.
