The PR Future podcast from the USC Center for Public Relations (CPR) provides insight into the future of public relations and strategic communication. Student-produced and directed, the podcast originates from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and is hosted by CPR Director and Golin Chairman Emeritus Fred Cook. Each season features discussions with public relations executives, academics, students and more as part of our mission to define the future of our industry and to develop those who will shape it. […] And as you said, agencies are paid for that purpose. So that shows you the shift in what's going to happen in public relations. If we remain in a polarized environment for the future, the nature of the work that we do is going to change. It's going to shift from this proactive promotion of being out there telling all the good things the company's doing to being more of a defensive position where you're sort of protecting the people from stories that are inaccurate or people that are attacking the company. And I think that requires a shift in the skill set that we're teaching at USC and a shift in the skills people are going to be looking for when you come into the workplace because it's not as much how do we tell this story, it's just how do we protect our reputation?
