Episode 23: Can Christianity Be Progressive?

Can Christianity change with the culture? Or is Christianity meant to change the culture?

The phrase "Progressive Christianity" has become increasingly common, but what does it actually mean? Does the Bible teach that God's truth evolves with society, or does Scripture present God's revelation as unchanging?

In this episode, we examine what the Bible says about God's unchanging character, the authority of Scripture, and the difference between biblical reform and cultural revision. We'll also explore how Christianity has historically transformed societies while remaining anchored to the same gospel that was "once for all delivered to the saints."

Can Christians grow in their understanding of Scripture? Absolutely. But does that mean Christianity itself changes? Join us as we examine this important question through the lens of Scripture.

Bible Verses Referenced:
Malachi 3:6; Psalm 119:89; Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 24:35; Romans 12:2; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Galatians 1:6-9; Jude 3; 2 Timothy 4:3-4; James 1:17; Hebrews 13:8; Genesis 1:26-27; Matthew 22:39; Matthew 7:12; Galatians 3:28; Philemon 16

Sources:
Progressive Christianity? by Michael J. Episode 22: What Does the Bible Really Teach About Sexuality?

Sexuality is one of the most discussed and debated topics in our culture today. Many people assume the Bible is simply a list of outdated rules, but is that really the case?

In this episode of Practical Apologetics, we step back from the cultural debate and begin where Scripture begins: creation. What was God's original design for humanity, marriage, and sexuality? Why does the Bible place boundaries around sex? What does it teach about adultery, pornography, premarital sex, and same-sex relationships? And how should Christians respond with both truth and compassion?

We'll also briefly explore what it means to be made in the image of God, why Scripture says we are "fearfully and wonderfully made," and why those truths are foundational to today's conversations about identity. A future episode will take a deeper look at what the Bible teaches specifically about gender identity.

Most importantly, we'll see that the Bible's message is not one of condemnation, but of redemption. Every one of us has fallen short of God's design, and every one of us is invited to receive God's grace through Jesus Christ.

Bible Verses Referenced (ESV):
Genesis 1:26-28, Genesis 2:18-25, Genesis 3, Psalm 139:13-16, Matthew 5:27-28, Matthew 19:3-6, Exodus 20:14, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-20, Ephesians 5:1-5, Hebrews 13:4

Sources:

The Bible and Homosexual Practice by Robert A. Episode 21: Does the Bible Condone Slavery?

Does the Bible condone slavery?

It's one of the most common objections raised against Christianity. Skeptics often argue that because the Bible regulates slavery, it must therefore endorse it. But is that what Scripture actually teaches?

In this episode of Practical Apologetics, we examine one of the Bible's most difficult topics by looking at the historical context of the ancient Near East, the different forms of servitude found in Scripture, and the distinction between regulating an existing institution and declaring it to be God's moral ideal. We'll also examine key passages like Exodus 21 and Leviticus 25, explore how the New Testament reshapes the relationship between master and servant, and ask whether the Bible ultimately points toward human dignity and freedom rather than oppression.

Rather than avoiding the difficult passages, we'll read them carefully, compare Scripture with Scripture, and let the Bible define its own terms.

Bible passages referenced:
Genesis 1:27
Exodus 21:2-6
Exodus 21:16
Exodus 21:26-27
Leviticus 25:39-46
Matthew 19:3-9
Galatians 3:28
Philemon 1:15-16
Colossians 4:1
1 Timothy 1:10

Sources referenced:
The Holy Bible (ESV)

Is God a Moral Monster?
