Asian/Asian American Couples Therapy with Canzi Wang, PhD

About My Guest Dr. Canzi Wang (https://www.drcanziwang.com/) is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in California, with over 17 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, and groups. She specializes in working with Asians/Asian Americans, immigrants, adults, and couples through a relational and multicultural lens. Grounded in mindfulness-based approaches and emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT), Dr. Wang creates a warm, authentic, and culturally sensitive space where clients feel truly heard. Her goal is to help people gain clarity, heal, and make meaningful changes through compassionate reflection and presence. You can find Dr. Wang on her website (https://www.drcanziwang.com/), through her YouTube channel @drcanziwang (https://www.youtube.com/@drcanziwang), and on RedBook at Dr. 粲子心理话 (https://www.xiaohongshu.com/user/profile/6024aedf000000000100008a?apptime=1789156771&shareRedId=ODY0NERKSE82NzUyOTgwNjY0OTc0NT5K&share_id=1b90559358114a08ab49bea77d3851e6&xhsshare=CopyLink&xsec_source=app_share&xsec_token=YBfAw-E-wSmH9hsX8yTzcawCnK1UFm2czebfDYce60vfY%3D). In This Episode Dr. Wang introduces the framework of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a prominent framework for couples therapy work. EFT is an evidenced based practice that focuses on the attachment dynamic between couples, redirecting conflict to the emotional content between partners and allowing them to find new ways of communicating. Dr. Wang discusses the values of slowing down the process of conflict in order to take time to understand the hurt underlying there anger in conflict, which can open the pathway to connect more vulnerable and honest connection. In her work with Asians and Asian American couples, Dr. Wang observed challenges to implementing EFT with this population and began adjusting her approach to be inclusive of the unique social needs and ways of processing information and relationships that she encountered. She discusses communication differences, such as how people from Asian cultures may use direct and indirect communication differently than white American cultures. Societal pressure to fit into model minority roles can also contribute to whether and how a couple is willing to engage in mental health therapy. Dr. Wang relates how Asian and Asian American communities often associate mental health services with failure and how it is not uncommon to associate one’s worth with their socioeconomic status, both of which can complicate couple conflict. As a result of her niche, Dr. Wang has found ways to culturally adapt the skillsets of EFT to more effectively support Asian and Asian-American couples. Finally, Dr. Wang then shares about her own experience moving to America as a young adult and how failure became a way of life as she learned to navigate living in a new country. Dr. Wang explores how training cross culturally both made her education harder and, ultimately, richer as she learned through trial and error. Dr. Wang makes the case for failure as a necessary and unavoidable, albeit painful, part of the the immigrant experience. Reproductive Psychiatry with Dr. Brittany Booth

About My Guest Dr. Brittany Booth is a board-certified, UCLA-trained adult psychiatrist with a special focus on treating people during reproductive transitions such as pregnancy and postpartum. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Boston University and her medical degree from UCLA. She also completed her psychiatry residency at UCLA, where she served as Chief Resident of the inpatient units and Chief Resident of the Women’s Life Center, a world-renowned center for reproductive psychiatry. In addition to her private practice (https://www.brittanyboothmd.com/), she is the associate director of the Women’s Life Center (https://www.uclahealth.org/medical-services/psychiatry/adult/womens-life-clinic) and sees patients in the UCLA Maternal Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (https://www.uclahealth.org/sites/default/files/documents/89/ucla-perinatal-brochure-1124.pdf?f=76c866c0). You can follow her on Instagram @Dr.BrittanyBooth (https://www.instagram.com/dr.brittanybooth/). In This Episode Dr. Booth brings a wealth of experience to our discussion on medication management within the context of reproductive hormones. She explains the role of hormone shifts in disorders such as postpartum depression (PPD) and postpartum OCD. It can be a terrifying time for new parents as they navigate poor sleep, changes to almost every aspect of life, and new or changing mental health symptoms. She covers medication options for support during this time, including a new medication that responds more quickly than SSRIs to PPD, a potential lifeline for child-bearing people. We explore what it means to “fail a medication,” a term often used in healthcare to indicate that a medication did not work for a patient, but that can be painful phrasing to hear. This can occur for a variety of reasons and open communication with one’s providers is helpful in assessing why a medication does not work and what alternatives might be available. Dr. Booth also touches on the value of having providers who communicate with each other, allowing for more responsive and comprehensive care, especially during times of higher need (like postpartum). In addition to failing a medication, new parents may feel stress when their bodies literally fail to do what is expected in human development. Wrestling with experiences of infertility or an inability to breastfeed can trigger intense feelings of shame, doubt, and sadness. In reflecting on her own history, Dr. Booth shares a deeply vulnerable story from her training that is valuable for patients and providers alike to hear. As providers, we sometimes face failure in deeply painful ways, like when a patient dies by suicide whom we were trying to help. The grief and loss of losing a patient in this way is one many mental health providers face, but it is not often discussed openly. Dr. Booth encourages providers to speak with each other about these experiences and find appropriate venues for support. She shares how her training site provided helpful supports to herself and her peers to help process and learn from this experience. Finally, Dr. Booth shares resources for finding additional information on reproductive psychiatry. Not all areas of the country have easy access to reproductively-informed psychiatric providers, but there are ways to bridge the gap through provider consultation and patient self-education as this field continues to grow, see below for where to access additional resources. Neurodiversity with Dr. Justin Lee

About My Guest Dr. Justin Lee is a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, which basically means he's a big nerd about brains. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology and then stayed on as faculty at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. After a number of years at OHSU, Dr. Lee and his family moved to the tiny island of Guam, where he now has a private practice serving the island community. He loves spending time traveling with his family, reading fantasy and sci-fi, and raising a little one. You can find Dr. Lee online at momentumpsych.net (https://www.momentumpsych.net/) In This Episode Dr. Lee helps listeners understand the difference between psychology and neuropsychology, which has a more explicit focus on brain function. He helps to highlight the important message that neurodiversity covers vastly more than ADHD and Autism, two diagnoses included in this label. More helpful than seeing neurodiversity as a rigid cut off system for diagnoses, Dr. Lee uses the framing of thresholds--the differences we all have on various forms of brain functioning and neurology. When we learn to work within our thresholds, then we can strategically leverage our strengths, compensate for areas of relative weakness, and build overall resilience. Dr. Lee discusses science as the perpetual pursuit of failure and nonjudgmental awareness as a helpful tool for evaluating our thresholds. He explores what failure can feel like when dealing with neurodiversity and how assessment can help individuals shift from an internal sense of failure to a sense of agency in managing the brain and nervous system they have. Finally, Dr. Lee shares what it was like to move to a tiny island from an academic institution and how that shifted the course of his career. He graciously reflects on choosing to be a parent first in an academia and rejecting judgements that frame this as "failure." Being able to identify your priorities, make choices congruent with those priorities, and respond kindly to those who may not understand are all modeled with ease as Dr. Lee talks about finding contentment in different stages of life. Improv Comedy with Ben Cassil

About My Guest Ben Cassil is a comedian based in Los Angeles, where he performs improv with the team Cosmo. Ben also teaches improv and hosts the comedy podcast “Live from the Big Apple.” (https://www.youtube.com/@LFTBApodcast) You can find him online at bencassil.com (https://www.bencassil.com) and @bencassil on Instagram. In This Episode Not everything that has therapeutic value occurs in a formal setting. So for the season finale, I went on a deep dive into an art form that celebrates practicing failure--improv comedy. Comedian Ben Cassil shares about the value of engaging in the playful art of improv comedy. He breaks down the different types of improv comedy and the key tenets that form its foundation. Improv brings many opportunities to practice relational skills: like listening, building empathy, letting go of control, and being more present in the moment. All while laughing. Ben explores how nonjudgmental awareness expands the experience of improv, both how we reflect on our own behavior and experiences, as well as how we engage with those around us. Vulnerability, expanding comfort with uncertainty, and responding more honestly can enhance experiences and help us to be less precious with each interaction. Ben later covers radical acceptance and how expressing support for our teammates (in improv and in life) starts to change how people treat each other and how safe and confident they feel. Finally, Ben shares his own experience of switching careers in his late 20's, gathering the courage to "let himself fail," and how stepping into that fear opened up a more rewarding path in life. A naturally gifted teacher, Ben's change out of academia and into improv ironically granted him more opportunities to use this talent. Ben's openness about this journey is a reminder that there is always space to change and grow and that it's okay, even necessary, for this process to take a long time. We are not shaped overnight, we build steadily and slowly as we learn from each experience. Maternal Mental Health with Dr. Erika Knuth

About My Guest Dr. Erika Knuth is a clinical psychologist specializing in maternal mental health. She works with individuals navigating the emotional complexities of fertility challenges, pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth, infant loss, traumatic birth, and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. In 2014, she earned a certificate from Postpartum Support International (PSI), and in 2018, she became one of the first therapists worldwide to receive PSI’s Advanced Certification in Perinatal Mental Health. She also served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for PSI’s Illinois Chapter. Dr. Knuth holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Theology, with two years of advanced training from Boston University’s Danielsen Institute in integrating spiritual and existential concerns into psychotherapy. A practical optimist, she finds joy in unexpected places and feels most alive in nature or with loved ones. You can find Dr. Knuth online at www.magnoliawheaton.com (http://www.magnoliawheaton.com/) In This Episode Dr. Knuth explores a number of themes birthing parents face: the nature of constant transitions and identity shifts, navigating the unexpected, and perfectionism and judgment. With so many choices to be made around pregnancy, birthing journeys, and parenting, it can be paralyzing for new parents trying to find what the "right" choices are. Dr. Knuth compassionately invites listeners to consider that each path not only can be different, but needs to be different base on the individuals and their unique circumstances. Dr. Knuth helps to unpack the differences between postpartum diagnoses of depression, "baby blues," anxiety, OCD, and psychosis. She walks us through what qualifies as postpartum for a mental health diagnoses, when to consider paternal postpartum for the supporting parent, and when a new parent might want to seek professional support. She addresses ways that lack of sleep and hormonal shifts make anyone vulnerable to a mental health episode, while addressing what variables can increase that risk. In discussing traumatic birth experiences, Dr. Knuth shares ways that providers of all kinds can support the birthing parent and improve their experience. She shares how to actively seek consent from and involve parents in solving moments of crisis during complicated births. She explains how this shifts the way trauma is experienced and processed in the moment and long after. Finally, Dr. Knuth shares insights from her own experiences of failure and reminds us all that "every failure is an opportunity to calibrate our compass."

Adolescent Mental Health with Dr. Rebecca Lierly

About My Guest Dr. Rebecca Lierly is a clinical psychologist who has been working in the field of adolescent psychology for fifteen years and still uses Urban Dictionary on a weekly basis. Specializing in acute crisis, group therapy, Autism Spectrum disorder, and trauma populations, she loves coming alongside families and find creative strategies to improve communication and coping. In This Episode Dr. Lierly breaks down the various levels of care that come with treatment options for adolescents--from weekly talk therapy to partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) to inpatient hospitalization. She helps parents understand why different levels may be recommended. Dr. Lierly highlights how parents can support adolescents through various challenges they might be facing, such as substance dependence, severe social anxiety, avoidant behaviors, suicidality, and more. Highlighting the key struggles and goals of adolescence, Dr. Lierly shares how it is a time where we figure out who we are, what we like, and how we want to move through the world, all while separating from our families of origin. A teen's social world is highly complex and social feedback is quite powerful during this time of life, in ways that are both helpful and hurtful. Building adaptability, experimenting safely, finding community, and developing coping strategies are all key pieces of developing through adolescence. Finally, Dr. Lierly shares examples of failure and how failures are prime learning opportunities for us and for teens, who are watching how adults respond to stress. She discusses how working on a team can change the experience of failure and green flags to look for when evaluating potential employers and colleagues. Dr. Lierly effectively models what she teaches--that failure is an opportunity to check in with yourself, identify what you need, ask for help where you need it, learn from what is not working, and then experiment with new ways of doing something. With kindness and humility, Dr. Lierly is a helpful example of what therapy and parenting can do for adolescents who are struggling. You can find Dr. Hill Weller on her website at https://www.drlamishahill.com/ (https://www.drlamishahill.com/) In This Episode Dr. Hill Weller deftly educates us about the interconnection of our individual stories and the systems and contexts that we function within. She provides a primer on the Ecological Systems Theory of psychology and invites us each to explore how our own experiences, contexts, and development continue to shape us. From navigating racism on the playground as a child to dealing with fallout from culture wars to the mutual condescension in today's political realm, Dr. Hill Weller holds compassion and understanding for the universal human experience. She brings in growth mindset as a useful tool in reframing difficult experiences and reflects on ways trauma disrupts our ability to connect with others. Failure can occur at all levels of the ecological model and we must examine how we can contribute to growth, learning, and repair when this happens. Finally, Dr. Hill Weller shares examples of professional failures that formed her into the person she is today. She describes looking back on these examples with more gratitude than shame. Reframing, big-picture awareness, and moving away from binary thinking are all tools Dr. Hill Weller references as she discusses DEI, the political exploitation of DEI, and how we find constructive paths forward individually and collectively.
