In a world of grumbling and complaining, Christians ought to be a people known for thanksgiving—a thanksgiving that goes beyond a feeling of gratitude and finds its proper end in the glory and enjoyment of God. In this passage, Paul insists that such thanksgiving is to characterize the whole of Christian life. So let us abound in thanksgiving to God as we ponder three glorious privileges that belong to Christians—namely, the Peace of Christ, the Word of Christ, and the Name of Christ.

Ambassadors of The King (Mark 6:7-13)

We applaud those who work for big companies or represent nations and peoples. But there is a greater honor still—and it belongs to every Christian: representing the King of kings and Lord of lords. What does it matter if the world forgets your name, if you get to represent His Name? In this passage, we see the making of Christ's ambassadors, as King Jesus calls the Twelve, gives them instruction, and sends them out on their first mission. And in their commissioning, we learn valuable lessons about the holy task to which we have been called.

The Danger of Familiarity (Mark 6:1-6)

Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth, but instead of welcoming Him home, the people took offense at Him. How could those who were so privileged to know Jesus their whole lives still be found in unbelief? How is it possible that they were so astonished by the teachings of Jesus, yet still remained unbelieving in their hearts? This passage confronts us with a searching question: Has our familiarity with the Christian religion dulled our awe and wonder at Christ?
