   Numbers 22-24 "The Unseen Hand"

   Introduction: “I was the lion who forced you to join with Aravis. I was the cat who comforted you among the houses of the dead. I was the lion who drove the jackals from you while you slept. I was the lion who gave the Horses the new strength of fear for the last mile so that you should reach King Lune in time. And I was the lion you do not remember who pushed the boat in which you lay, a child near death, so that it came to shore where a man sat, wakeful at midnight, to receive you.” - C.S. Lewis, The Horse and His Boy God's Protection: - King of Syria surrounds Elisha at Dothan. Elisha's servant see's the and panics. He was unaware of the army of God that was there with them.- "And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."  -2 Kings 6:15-17 KJV Deuteronomy 31:8 – "And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee, fear not, neither be dismayed." Israel has just experienced a turning point. They have been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. Now, the time of the conquest is beginning. Israel has gone from murmuring in unbelief to Deliverance and Dependance. God has just given Israel victories over Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og the king of Bashan. Israel  is continuing forward to the land God promised them. Psalm 91:1-2He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91:11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Proverbs 18:10The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. Outline: I. Moab's Plot: Numbers 22:1-6- Psalm 11: 2 "For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart."- We are in a war. We are facing enemies every day. - Enemy at the Gates (This style uses split-perspective illustrations. On one side, a sniper is deeply camouflaged in rubble or snow; on the other side, their scope reticle is perfectly aligned with an unsuspecting target who is also hunting them.) II. Baalam's Problem: Baalam is after riches. "Ballad's error"- Jude 11 "Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core."- 2 Peter 2:25 "Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;"- In Numbers 25, Balaam helped Moab by advising King Balak to use Moabite and Midianite women to seduce the men of Israel into sexual immorality and idolatry. III. God's Protection: - God's unseen hand of protection is seen.- He intervenes and protects Israel and instead of Baalam cursing them, they are blessed.    Numbers 20,21 "Moving in the Right Direction"

   Introduction: Numbers 20 is one of the most heartbreaking chapters in all of Scripture.Numbers 21, however, is one of the most triumphant chapters in all of Scripture. There is a turning point with Israel which leads them from defeat and heartbreak, to Triumph and Victory. What is a Turning Point? "it is often the time when a situation starts to change in an important, and usually positive, way." (Cambridge Dictionary) - Naaman dipping in the Jordan River: 2 Kings 5 I. Death- The Death of Miriam: Numbers 20:1- The Death of Aaron: Numbers 20:23-29- "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" Hebrews 9:27; "Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." -James 4:14- Memento mori (meh-MEN-toh MOH-ree) is a Latin phrase that translates to "remember that you must die"- "Around AD 530, St. Benedict placed this among the “tools for good works” in his rule, “To keep death daily before one’s eyes.” One common custom was for every monk to keep a human skull in his cell. Another was for the monks, when they passed each other in the halls, to say to one another, “Memento mori,” remember that you will die. And even now every Ash Wednesday we are marked with ashes and hear, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19)." (https://schooloffaith.com/rosary-archive/memento-mori) - Death helps us put things into perspective. - "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality." 1 COR 15:51-53- The Brevity of life must remind us that our time here is not only temporary, but numbered. There is a clock for each of us. 40 years for the Children of Israel were wasted wondering because of unbelief. II. DisobedienceIsrael's Disobedience: Numbers 20: 2-5- Chode = contend with; complain- Complaining about the water. Asking Questions they already had the answers to. (Numbers 14:20-24)- Discontent. Distrust. Miserable.  Now they are asking about the Cattle. Before it was their children if you remember. Moses & Aaron Disobedience: Numbers 20: 6-13- God did not tell Moses to smite the Rock, He told him to grab the staff and then speak to the Rock. The Rock was a type of Jesus Christ.- 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 "1Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3and did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness."- These verses are hard to read because of the disobedience of Aaron and Moses and ultimately this would keep them from entering the land of promise. (Not a picture of Heaven, but victory in this life)- Moses & Aaron had been enduring this crowd in the Wilderness for 40 years. Wandering. Unbelief had kept them out, and now the Promised land is in sight, but unbelief would keep Moses and Aaron out as well. They failed to trust God and uphold His Holiness.- Moses and Aaron were still held personally responsible. The command was to take the staff and speak to the Rock. Instead, he took the staff and then spoke angrily to the people and smote the rock twice. He was held responsible for his own sin. Remember, we are responsible for us. Cautionary tale of not only the importance of accountability, but also ownership. (A lot of people do not enter into Victory in the Christian life because stumble over the sins of others.We have to understand tha

   Numbers 15-19 "How to Handle Failure"

   Title: "How to Handle Failure"Text: Numbers 15-19 Introduction: One of the greatest underdogs in history, is the fictional character Rocky Balboa. In the ring, Rocky is beaten, bloodied, and constantly being knocked down. This of course symbolizes the unavoidable setbacks and defeats that life bring us. Some of these are brought on by us, others are brought on simply because life hits hard. Either way, Rocky consistently demonstrates that his failures are not permanent. He famously tells his son, "It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." His journey ultimately shows us that success is forged by getting up after you fall. Which brings us to Numbers 15-19; "How to Handle Failure" Biblical examples of Failure:- Adam & Eve Disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit.- Moses killed an Egyptian in cold blood.- Samson lusted after a sinful woman and told her all his heart- David committed adultery and conspired to kill the woman's husband.- Peter denied Jesus three times Failure: "omission of occurrence or performance; specifically : a failing to perform a duty or expected action." Webster Israel failed because of Unbelief.  They sent 12 spies into the land, 10 of the 2 gave an evil report. They began complaining and conspiring to appoint them a leader to lead them back to Egypt. God's anger was kindled against them, but Moses prayed an intercessory prayer. God heard Moses, and spared them. However, He judged them and told them that those 20 years and upward, who murmured would not see the land and would die in the Wilderness. Israel, who did not want to return to the Wilderness, decided they would go to pursue the land. They presumed that God would give them the Victory despite Moses telling them not to go. This was a huge failure of the children of Israel. So the next question is, what now? Let's look at each chapter Numbers 15: God gives renewed sacrificial laws and instructions for the future generation of Israelites entering the Promised Land.- What does this passage teach us about God? God was more concerned for the future generations than they were.- "40 That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God. 41 I am the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord your God." Numbers 15:40,41 Number 16: Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and 250 Israelite leaders rebel against the authority of Moses and Aaron. This results in Judgment from God where the ground opens and consumes some of them and fire comes down and consumes the rest.  This is stopped by the intercession of Moses and Aaron.- There is a difference between unbelief and disbelief. Unbelief is the opposite of Faith. Disbelief is a refusal to believe.- The "Behavioral Science Unit" was created by the FBI in 1972 to study criminal minds to help catch others.- We should do the same thing. We should study the Behavior and Actions of the Human Race, as a warning and a way to stay close to God. To not only help others by catching it, but catching it in our own lives.- Israel sinned. There was unbelief, and they failed. In chapter 15, we see God talking about the next generation. He is looking forward. What does Israel do? Well, certain of them join forces together to create a resistance. They go after Moses and Aaron and the results are catastrophic. When you fail, don't go deeper, ask God to lift you up. Turn away from the unbelief, turn away form the sin, let God lift you up. Look forward. What happened? Certain men went further, despite Judgment in previous chapters, they chose to conspire against the man of God. Numbers 17: The story of Aaron's Rod budding- God commands Moses to collect the 12 tribal staffs and place them in the Tabernacle. Only Aarons rod had bloomed. This proved his divine election. - Israel has been complaining, doubting,  and there was envy and strife in the camp. This eventually shows the real issue, unbelief. It spirals to
