Ep. 11- The Night Queens Refused to Stay Silent: The Murder of Julio Rivera
Episode 11: The Night Queens Refused to Stay Silent — The Murder of Julio Rivera On July 2, 1990, 29-year-old Julio Rivera was brutally murdered in Jackson Heights, Queens, simply because he was gay. Julio was more than a victim. He was a loving brother, uncle, and friend. A man who loved dancing, laughter, and looking his best. He had dreams, relationships, and a future that was stolen from him. When investigators initially focused on a possible drug-related motive, Julio's family, friends, and the LGBTQ+ community refused to accept that his murder was being understood correctly. They demanded answers, accountability, and justice. What followed was more than a murder investigation. It became a movement that helped change LGBTQ+ visibility in Queens, inspired the creation of the Queens Pride Parade, and ensured Julio's name would never be forgotten. In this episode of Pride, Crime & Story Time, we explore Julio's life, the horrific events of that July night, the investigation and court proceedings, and the community that refused to stay silent. Because before Julio Rivera became part of LGBTQ+ history, he was simply Julio. And his life mattered. Content warning: This episode discusses homophobic violence, murder, and discrimination. Missing from the Village: Part 3 — The Investigation
Episode 10 — Missing from the Village: Part 3 — The Investigation For years, men were disappearing from Toronto’s Village while their families and community desperately searched for answers. In the final part of Missing from the Village, we turn to the investigation. We follow Project Houston and Project Prism, the detectives tasked with connecting the disappearances, and the evidence that finally led investigators to Bruce McArthur. A name on a calendar. A red Dodge Caravan. Thousands of hours of surveillance. A secret search warrant. Digital evidence. And a discovery investigators could never unsee. We’ll also talk about the moments when McArthur crossed paths with police before his arrest—and the difficult questions those encounters raise about whether more could have been done. On January 18, 2018, investigators were forced to make a split-second decision when another man entered McArthur’s apartment, showing how diligent they were in their work. What they found inside brought the investigation to an end—and may have saved another life. But as we close this three-part series, this story does not belong to Bruce McArthur. It belongs to Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi, Majeed “Hamid” Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Kirushnakumar Kanagaratnam, Dean Lisowick, Selim Esen, and Andrew Kinsman. Eight men. Eight lives. Eight stories we will remember. 🎙️ Pride, Crime & Story Time Real stories. Real voices. Every story has a home. Content warning: This episode discusses murder, violence, sexual violence, and disturbing evidence recovered during a homicide investigation. Listener discretion is advised. Missing from the Village- More stories- More lives
Missing from the Village: Part 2 — More Stories, More Lives Before their names became connected to one of Toronto's most devastating cases, they had stories of their own. In Part 2 of Missing from the Village, we continue remembering the men whose lives were taken — not for how their stories ended, but for how they lived. This week, we remember Kirushnakumar "Kumar" Kanagaratnam, Dean Lisowick, Selim Esen, and Andrew Kinsman. Four more men. Four more lives. Four more stories that deserve to be remembered. Before we talk about the investigation, the failures, the questions, and eventually the person responsible, we're taking the time to remember them. Because they were more than missing persons. They were real people with families, friendships, struggles, accomplishments, dreams, and people waiting for them to come home. 🎙️ Episode 9: Missing from the Village — Part 2

🎙️ Episode 8: Missing from the Village — Remembering the First Four
Before they became names in a criminal investigation, they were sons, fathers, husbands, friends, coworkers, and members of a community. In this episode of Pride, Crime & Story Time, we step into Toronto’s Village and remember the first four men whose lives were taken: Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi, Majeed “Hamid” Kayhan, and Soroush Mahmudi. Skanda, who loved nature, music, dancing, and his new puppy. Basir, a devoted father who worked hard for his family. Majeed, a father, singer, dancer, soccer fan, and lover of Bollywood films. Soroush, an immigrant who built a life in Canada, a husband and stepfather who loved cooking, movies, camping, and making people laugh. This isn't a story about a killer. It's about four men whose stories deserve to be remembered. This is Missing from the Village: Four Lives, Four Stories. LAST CALL — THE MEN WE WILL NOT FORGET
The investigation has gone cold. Years have passed. The evidence seems forgotten. Then, a new forensic technology changes everything. In the final chapter of Last Call, we follow the investigation that finally gave detectives a name: Richard Rogers. From newly revealed fingerprints and a decades-old arrest record, to surveillance, his arrest, and the trial that followed, this episode traces the evidence that brought a nearly decade-long investigation back to life. But this episode isn't about the killer. It's about the men whose lives were taken. Peter Anderson. Thomas Mulcahy. Anthony Marrero. Michael Sakara. And Frederic Spencer. Five men. Five lives. Five stories that deserve to be remembered as more than names in a true-crime case. Their families waited for answers. Investigators refused to give up. And years later, their stories still matter. Because justice can't give them their lives back—but we can make sure they are never forgotten. 🎙️ Pride, Crime & Story Time Real stories. Real people. Every story has a home.
