Only 14 take applications for a pavement cable channel today; 103 took government money and have nothing a resident can use. Three — Kent, West Northamptonshire and Brighton & Hove — took the money and still say no. In London, 36% of boroughs block channels, against 6% elsewhere.HYUNDAI IONIQ 3 FROM £18,495. The entry 42kWh car is £22,245, or £18,495 after the £3,750 Electric Car Grant. The 61kWh car is £21,995 after grant with a claimed 308 miles. Hyundai hasn't published the small battery's range or the DC charging speed yet.EXPLAINER — WHAT DOES CHARGING COST PER MILE? Price per kWh divided by miles per kWh. At 3.5 mi/kWh: 6.6p overnight is under 2p a mile, a 54p street charger about 15p, a 79p rapid about 23p. Charge at home at the wrong time and it's about 10p.THE NEW RULES FROM 21 OCTOBER. Cross-pavement channels installed or authorised by the highway council no longer need planning permission in England — except in conservation areas, listed building grounds and scheduled monuments. Council consent is still required. A new consultation on charging for tenants and leaseholders closes 16 December.ZEV MANDATE REVIEW CLOSES TONIGHT. The consultation closes at 11:59pm on 23 October. In the AA's Q3 2026 EV Readiness Index, running out of charge caused 1.3% of electric car callouts, down from 8.3% in 2015. AA patrols fixed 88.1% of EV callouts at the roadside, against 83.5% for petrol. Used EVs now cost about 1% more than comparable petrol cars; new EVs are still about 25% dearer.RECORD SEPTEMBER, STILL SHORT. 99,201 battery electric cars were registered in September — a record month and 28.3% of the market (SMMT). Year to date, the share is 26.2% against a 33% ZEV mandate target, and the SMMT says another 265,000 EVs would be needed in Q4. For buyers, that pressure usually means discounts.CROSS-PAVEMENT CHARGING, EXPLAINED. About 8 million households in England have no off-street parking. A cable channel in the pavement lets you charge at home rates. If you can charge at home, switching almost always pays: a 16,000-mile diesel commuter saves about £2,540 a year. If you can't, a good hybrid is still the honest answer — for now.
