Ο προερχόμενος από τη συντηρητική παράταξη Κωστής Στεφανόπουλος ήταν πρόταση του Ανδρέα Παπανδρέου για να αποφύγει τις πρόωρες εκλογές και να φέρει σε δύσκολη θέση τη Νέα Δημοκρατία. Η προεδρία του όμως εξελίχθηκε σε μία κατά γενική ομολογία καλή και εξωστρεφή προεδρία.

Η προεδρική θητεία του Χρήστου Σαρτζετάκη ξεκίνησε με μία επεισοδιακή ψηφοφορία στην βουλή και έληξε μάλλον άδοξα. Αλλά και η επαναφορά του Κωνσταντίνου Καραμανλή στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο, μετά την επανεκλογή της Νέας Δημοκρατίας, κατέληξε περισσότερο διακοσμητική, παρά ουσιαστική.
