Profiles in Contrast

About Profiles in Contrast

Sophie Manners delivers her thoughts on the life and times, traits and exploits of a prominent historical figure and then contrasts that individual with a mystery modern-age figure who is similar in the arc of their life, their personal credo, and how they have been treated by history. She begins with a brief biographical sketch, followed by a tease in which she describes the modern era contrasting figure before revealing their identity. She then explains her reasoning for her choice and contrasts the pair before concluding with summary comments and a personal statement about which one she finds the more compelling figure and why. Hypatia of Alexandria and the Legend that Buried Her

She headed the Platonic school at Alexandria, revised her father's commentary on Ptolemy's Almagest so comprehensively that he replaced his own version with hers, taught algebra through commentary on Diophantus, instructed students from across the Mediterranean regardless of their religion, and was consulted by the Roman prefect of Alexandria on civic affairs. She was also murdered by a Christian mob in 415 CE, and that murder has been so thoroughly her public identity ever since that t...

Simon Bolivar and the Dream that Outlasted the Dreamer

He liberated six nations from Spanish colonial rule, rode seventy-five thousand miles in the saddle doing it, and died at forty-seven believing his life's work had failed. He was wrong about the failure - the nations stayed free - but his final assessment, "he who serves a revolution is plowing the sea," remains one of the most honest things a revolutionary has ever said about the gap between the vision and the reality. In this episode Sophie examines the career of El Libertador -...

William the Conqueror and the England He Remade

He never spoke English, was barely literate, and had more influence on the English language than any other person before or since. He killed the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy, gave their land to his Norman followers, commissioned the most comprehensive administrative survey of a country in medieval history, and built the institutional foundations on which English common law and parliamentary governance subsequently grew. His funeral was interrupted by a lawsuit. In this episode So...
