Forget the Sunday school flannelgraph. That "cartoonish snake in an apple tree" image? It's not what the Hebrew text actually describes — and once you see it, you can't unsee it.
In this episode, we dig into the original Hebrew word for "serpent" — nachash — and uncover three layers of meaning that completely reshape the scene in Eden: a symbol of chaos, a whisperer of false divination, and a "Shining One" clothed in glory. That's why Eve doesn't flinch when it speaks to her — she's not talking to a reptile, she's face-to-face with a celestial being.

When Prophecy Fails: The Secret History of 1844
What happens when a religious movement guarantees the exact date the world will end... and then nothing happens?
In the finale of our series Ancient Lies, Modern Suits, we pull back the curtain on the extraordinary origins of Seventh-day Adventism. It all started with a 19th-century Baptist pastor named William Miller, who calculated that Jesus Christ would return to Earth between 1843 and 1844. Millions believed him. But when the clock struck midnight and the world kept turning, it triggered what history calls "The Great Disappointment."
But the story didn't end there. Instead of disbanding, a small group of believers reinterpreted the prophecy, shifting the timeline from Earth to an "Investigative Judgment" in a literal Heavenly Sanctuary. Guided by the prolific visions of a young pioneer named Ellen G. White, they rebuilt a global movement that completely transformed traditional Christian views of the soul, the afterlife, and the Sabbath.

Are Jehovah’s Witnesses Christian?
Who are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and how do their beliefs compare to historic Christianity?
In this episode, we examine the origins of the Jehovah’s Witness movement, tracing its roots from Charles Taze Russell and the Bible Student Movement to the influence of Joseph Rutherford and the Watchtower Society. We explore key teachings that distinguish Jehovah’s Witness theology from orthodox Christian doctrine, including their views on the Trinity, the identity of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, salvation, heaven and hell, Armageddon, and the significance of 1914.
We’ll also look at the movement’s history of end-times predictions, the doctrine of the 144,000, and the belief in Christ’s invisible return. Throughout the discussion, we compare these teachings with the historic Christian understanding of Scripture.
Whether you’re curious about Jehovah’s Witnesses, have friends or family involved in the movement, or simply want to better understand different religious worldviews, this episode provides an accessible introduction to one of the world’s most recognizable religious groups.
