Mining and the Circular Economy (Alan Young)
In this week’s episode, we’re joined by Alan Young, a global circular economy expert with a contagious passion for accelerating our transformation to a zero-waste, low-carbon future. Alan has held leadership positions with organizations such as the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), the Circular Economy Leadership Coalition, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) and the Council of Canadian Academies Expert Panel on Circular Economy. In our chat, we discuss what it takes to close the loop on mineral and metal supply chains, the innovative business models to get us there and the importance of collectively differentiating between competitive and pre-competitive factors. Shifting from Closure to Transition (Peter Whitbread-Abrutat, PhD)
In this week’s episode, we’re joined by Peter Whitbread-Abrutat, an environmental and mine closure specialist with over 25 years of diverse experience in natural resources management and sustainable development. As CEO of Future Terrains (a UK-based social enterprise), Pete chats with us about the importance of building ecological integrity and enhancing community wellbeing in post-mining areas. We discuss the difference between “mine closure” and “mine transition”, and why a move to the latter is imperative. Pete explains his holistic approach to mining, defining a mine as simply a piece in a larger jigsaw of economic, social, environmental, and political factors. His call to action is to make this mindset shift common practice, and include a far broader range of stakeholders in the mine transition process, in order to craft sustainble post-mining future terrains the world over!
