Tariffs, Taxes & Tobacco: The Pressures Facing the Premium Cigar Industry

In this episode of the Protecting the Legacy podcast, hosted by the Boutique Cigar Association (BCA), Dr. Gaby Kafie of Kafie 1901 Cigars (https://kafie.com) and Greg Free of Fortaleza y Libre Cigars (https://fylcigars.com) dive deep into two major issues impacting the premium cigar world — the new California UTL regulations that have recently gone into effect, and the growing concern over import tariffs on handmade cigars. Together, they unpack how these policies are reshaping business operations, distribution, and pricing for boutique manufacturers across the United States and beyond. This candid conversation sheds light on the challenges small family-owned cigar companies face — and how unity and advocacy are more crucial than ever to protect the artisanal spirit of our craft.

Think $10K Starts a Cigar Brand? Think Again

In this no-holds-barred episode of Protecting the Legacy, we pull back the curtain on what it really takes to launch and sustain a boutique cigar company. From the romanticized idea of blending cigars in paradise to the cold reality of financial burn rates, inventory costs, and brand building — we’re talking hard numbers and harder truths. We kick things off by defining what boutique truly means in today’s cigar industry. Then we go deep into the financials — both short term and long term — that separate fantasy from sustainability. Spoiler alert: $10,000 isn’t getting you past the starting line. If you’re not thinking in seven figures, you’re not playing the game. Whether you’re a dreamer, an investor, or just curious about the behind-the-scenes world of premium cigars, this episode is your wake-up call. 🔗 Tune in and ask yourself: Are you wealthy enough — or wise enough — to get into the cigar business?
