MDMA, Psilocybin & Healing the Inner Child | Machan Taylor
What happens when a singer who has performed with Pink Floyd, Sting, and some of the biggest names in music discovers that decades of success haven't healed the wounds of childhood? In this deeply personal episode of **Psychedelics as Medicine**, I am Dr. DREAM, and my guest is **Machan Taylor**, acclaimed vocalist, songwriter, and author of the memoir *Naked Out Loud*. Machan shares her extraordinary journey from postwar Japan to performing on some of the world's greatest stages—and the emotional struggles that remained hidden beneath the applause. At just four years old, Machan was uprooted from Japan and brought to America, leaving behind her grandmother, her first language, and the only world she had ever known. Growing up between cultures in a dysfunctional family left her struggling with belonging, identity, shame, and self-worth. Despite an extraordinary musical career that included performing with **Pink Floyd, Sting, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, and George Benson**, those emotional wounds continued to influence her life. Everything began to shift when she explored **MDMA-assisted psychotherapy in 2020**. During her first guided session, Machan experienced a remarkable vision of swimming alongside a whale that seemed to guide her back across the Pacific Ocean to her childhood in Japan. That experience became a turning point in her journey of self-discovery, emotional healing, and reconnecting with parts of herself she had long suppressed. **In this conversation, we explore:** - How childhood trauma can remain hidden beneath professional success - MDMA-assisted therapy and reconnecting with childhood memories - The differences between recreational psychedelic use and intentional therapeutic experiences - Why preparation, professional support, and psychedelic integration matter - Machan's experiences with MDMA and psilocybin - Buddhism, meditation, consciousness, and spiritual transformation - How music became both a sanctuary and a way of hiding emotional pain - The Japanese cultural concept of "saving face" and the freedom of revealing one's truth - How writing *Naked Out Loud* became part of Machan's healing journey - Moving beyond shame and fear toward self-acceptance and authenticity We also share stories involving Pink Floyd, sound healing, Japan, and the unexpected musical connection between Machan's beautiful Brazilian music and my recent travels. One of the most moving moments comes when I ask Machan what she would say today to the four-year-old girl she left behind in Japan. Her answer is a beautiful reflection on identity, belonging, and finally coming home to yourself. **ABOUT MACHAN TAYLOR** Machan Taylor is an internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, and author whose remarkable musical career includes collaborations and performances with Pink Floyd, Sting, Foreigner, Pat Benatar, George Benson, and numerous other celebrated artists. Her memoir, *Naked Out Loud*, explores her life in music alongside deeply personal experiences of childhood trauma, cultural identity, Buddhism, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and emotional transformation. **EXPLORE MORE** Psychedelics as Medicine: https://PsychedelicsAsMedicine.com It's All Good Podcasts: https://ItsAllGoodPodcasts.com Discover Machan Taylor's memoir: *Naked Out Loud*. https://MachanTaylor.com **JOIN THE CONVERSATION** Have psychedelics, meditation, music, or another form of inner work helped you reconnect with yourself?
