Why in the World... E01 - Dr. Charlie Nagle
To kick off the season of "Why in the World?" We are pleased to interview the newest addition to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas in Austin, Dr. Charlie Nagle.
Professor Nagle earned his doctorate at Georgetown and is defined as a quantitative research methodologist working in the areas of second language learning, phonetics and phonology, and speech perception and production.

Pterocast Episode # 13. Noemí Segarra: "En Puerto Rico dijimos 'basta' de una manera creativa"
Noemi Segarra Ramirez is a movement artist and co-founder of artist collective PISO Proyecto who visited The University of Texas at Austin last fall. We interviewed her on foot –walking is one of her artistic practices–and learned why she situates her work at the intersection of social justice and embodied practices.
What does it take for our bodies to relate differently to people or places? In this 10-minute audio story, Noemi shares her thoughts on social justice, somatics, and improvisation techniques in the context of recent states of emergency in Puerto Rico.
Cultural, social, economic, and political forces all manifest themselves in our bodies through our posture, gestures, attention, breathing, and overall well-being. Leaning on improvisation techniques–and on each other–could assist us in the process of responding to pressing questions in rapidly changing times.

Pterocast Episode #12 Dr. Kim TallBear: "Settler colonialism doesn't only hurt indigenous peoples."
In this interview, conducted by Monserrat Madariaga, Dr. Kim TallBear talks about new avenues for critical and creative academic research, how polyamory can help deconstruct compulsory monogamy in settler-colonial states. She also discussed the ideas of indigenous belonging, questioned the assumptions of ancestry in DNA tests and much more.
"Dr. Kim TallBear is author of "Native American DNA: Tribal Belonging and the False Promise of Genetic Science" (2013) and is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Native Studies, University of Alberta. She studies the racial politics of “gene talk” in science and popular culture. A former environmental planner, she has become interested in the similarities between Western constructions of "nature" and "sexuality” as they are defined and sanctioned historically by those in power. TallBear is interested in how sex and nature can be understood differently in indigenous worldviews".

Pterocast Episodio #9 Sebastián Calfuqueo. Los conocimientos del afecto.
El artista visual Mapuche Sebastián Calfuqueo vino desde Chile a la Universidad de Texas en Austin, durante febrero de 2019, a presentar su obra en el evento “Of Other Indigenous Life Ways / Kangechi Mongeñ”, invitado por el programa Native American and Indigenous Studies. Para Sebastián, gracias a que otras personas Mapuche antes que él resistieron con sus cuerpos las violencias coloniales y patriarcales, él ahora puede crear y luchar desde el arte por su pueblo. En esta entrevista, habla de su biografía, de sus procesos y búsquedas en la pertenencia Mapuche, de su trabajo con la masculinidad, la homosexualidad y lo queer. También, del extractivismo y el terrorismo de Estado en Wallmapu (territorio histórico Mapuche), del Kolectivo mapuche feminista Rangiñtulewfü y las solidaridades con otros pueblos de Abiayala. Una de sus tantas frases para el bronce fue esta: “Es nuestra responsabilidad política como jóvenes seguir metiendo el dedo en la llaga hasta que esto explote para que cambie el sistema”.

Pterocast Episodio #8 Barbara Zecchi y el Gynocine
La profesora Barbara Zecchi visitó los estudios de Pterodáctilo para charlar sobre su proyecto sobre cine producido por mujeres en España llamado Gynocine. Barbara también nos recomienda películas olvidadas, o cuya autoría se le quitó a las mujeres durante el Franquismo, junto con películas más recientes hechas por mujeres del Sur global. ¡Pasen y escuchen!

En esta entrevista, con Montserrat Madariaga y Ana Cecilia Calle, Rubí Carreño nos dejó sus risas, confesiones y ética de trabajo. Todos tienen una canción de paz que tararear por la vida, nos dijo.
