About Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes

Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos (Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes) is a bold and thought-provoking podcast dedicated to uncovering the true history of Borikén—the island we now know as Puerto Rico. Through weekly episodes, we seek to awaken consciousness across the Latino community, sparking real conversations that bridge generations and borders. Our show dives deep into the stories often left untold, exploring how Puerto Rico became an unexpected bridge between two continents and examining the historical, cultural, and political forces that have shaped our identity. We confront the good, the bad, and the ugly—highlighting the beauty of Boricua resilience while also facing the realities of economic bondage and colonial legacy. At the heart of Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos is a commitment to dialogue. We will meet with voices from across the diaspora—activists, historians, artists, elders, and youth—to discuss Puerto Rico’s path toward true self-governance and freedom. This is not just about history; it’s about envisioning a future where Puerto Ricans, both on the island and in the U.S., are empowered, unified, and heard. With nearly 9 million Puerto Ricans worldwide, our community is a force. This podcast will also explore Puerto Rico’s deep connections with other nations in the Caribbean and Latin America, including Cuba and the Dominican Republic, celebrating our shared struggles, victories, and cultural ties. Puerto Rico Abran los Ojos is more than a podcast—it’s a movement. Join the conversation. Be part of the change.

Puerto Rico at the UN: 128 Years, Congressional Power, and the Right to Decide

(https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/voicemail) If Puerto Rico’s colonial question was settled in 1953, why does Congress still exercise territorial authority over the island? In this episode of Puerto Rico, Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz examines Washington’s call to end the mandate of the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization—and why Cuba’s participation cannot justify dismissing the independent voices of Puerto Rican petitioners. Drawing on his appearance at the United Nations in June 2026, Edwin discusses the different futures advocated before the committee, including independence, statehood, and reunification with Spain. We examine UN General Assembly Resolution 748, the distinction between local self-government and political equality, and three important Supreme Court decisions: Puerto Rico v. Sánchez Valle, Financial Oversight Board v. Aurelius, and United States v. Vaello Madero. These cases address separate legal questions, but they document continuing congressional authority and unequal treatment. PROMESA’s unelected fiscal oversight board further illustrates the limits of Puerto Rico’s control over its own affairs. After 128 years under United States sovereignty, Edwin calls for a binding referendum that includes statehood, independence, and reunification with Spain—with clearly defined terms and the agreements necessary to implement the people’s decision. Reunification would require Spain’s consent and negotiated legal and international arrangements. Does the present relationship provide political equality—or preserve territorial subordination? (https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/voicemail) Did you know that after the American invasion of 1898, Protestant missionary organizations divided Puerto Rico into religious territories? Through the Comity Agreement, different denominations coordinated their missionary activities across the island. But was this simply religious freedom, or was religion also used to Americanize Puerto Rican society? 🎥 Discover this forgotten chapter of history with Edwin Ortiz on Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes. 🌐 CONNECT WITH US 📺 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes (https://www.youtube.com/@PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes) 🎙️ Substack: https://puertoricoopenyoureyes.substack.com/ (https://puertoricoopenyoureyes.substack.com/) 🎧 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5RLJrBUuligvF675jKmVJO (https://open.spotify.com/show/5RLJrBUuligvF675jKmVJO) 📱 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@puerto.rico.open1 (https://www.tiktok.com/@puerto.rico.open1) 📲 Download Our App: https://app.puertoricoabranlosojos.com/ (https://app.puertoricoabranlosojos.com/) 🌎 Official Podcast Website: https://puertoricoabranlosojos.com/ (https://puertoricoabranlosojos.com/) 🎤 RSS Podcast: https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/ (https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/) 🎙️ LEAVE US A VOICE MESSAGE! Your voice matters! Leave a voice message of up to 60 seconds. / ¡Tu voz cuenta! Deja un mensaje de voz de hasta 60 segundos. (https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/voicemail) THEY DEFENDED PUERTO RICO! Federico Degetau y González and Luis Muñoz Rivera Did you know that Puerto Rican representatives challenged racist insults from American government figures more than a century ago? Federico Degetau y González was a lawyer, writer, and former member of Spain’s parliament before becoming Puerto Rico’s first Resident Commissioner. He challenged former Navy Secretary Hilary Herbert’s claim that Puerto Ricans were an inferior race. Luis Muñoz Rivera was a poet, journalist, and leader in Puerto Rico’s autonomous government before becoming Resident Commissioner. In 1916, he answered Joseph Cannon’s offensive remarks on the House floor, defending his homeland’s dignity and Puerto Ricans’ right to self-government. Our history includes the Puerto Ricans who answered back. 🎥 Watch, share, and tell us: Did you know their stories? 💬 LEAVE A VOICE MESSAGE https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/voicemail/ (https://rss.com/podcasts/puerto-rico-open-your-eyes/voicemail/) 🤝 CROWDFUNDER — SUPPORT OUR PROJECT https://www.crowdfunder.com/p/project-puerto-rico-in-spain (https://www.crowdfunder.com/p/project-puerto-rico-in-spain) 📲 WEBSITE & FREE APP https://puertoricoabranlosojos.com/ (https://puertoricoabranlosojos.com/) https://app.puertoricoabranlosojos.com/ (https://app.puertoricoabranlosojos.com/) 🎙️ READ, WATCH & LISTEN Substack: https://puertoricoopenyoureyes.substack.com/ (https://puertoricoopenyoureyes.substack.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes (https://www.youtube.com/@PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes) Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5RLJrBUuligvF675jKmVJO (https://open.spotify.com/show/5RLJrBUuligvF675jKmVJO) TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@puerto.rico.open1 (https://www.tiktok.com/@puerto.rico.open1) 🌎 OUR INITIATIVES The National Puerto Rico & Spain Initiative: https://tnprsi.org/ (https://tnprsi.org/) Proyecto Puerto Rico en España: https://proyectopuertoricoenespana.com/ (https://proyectopuertoricoenespana.com/) Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño: https://partidoautonomistapuertoriqueno.com/ (https://partidoautonomistapuertoriqueno.com/) 📘 FACEBOOK TNPRSI: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582909199852 (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61582909199852) Proyecto Puerto Rico en España: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61578796271848 (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61578796271848) ❤️ PATREON https://www.patreon.com/PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes (https://www.patreon.com/PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes) 📩 CONTACT PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes@gmail.com (mailto:PuertoRicoOpenYourEyes@gmail.com)
