Ep 8 Part 2 : English Dept Reality Check (Spiral Curricula, Dept Tips & NI Stories)

In Part 2 of our English Department Reality Check, educator and consultant Martin Ferguson breaks down exactly what a cumulative, step-by-step curriculum looks like in practice. Rather than stressing over complete overhauls, Martin shares highly practical, workload-saving advice on how to audit your current Key Stage 3 schemes using short extracts instead of entire novels. Later in the episode, acclaimed local author Sue Divin explains why integrating contemporary Northern Irish voices is the ultimate secret weapon for engaging reluctant readers and helping pupils "feel seen". She also shares actionable ways to secure funded author visits for your school so you can inspire your classes without stretching the department budget. Grab a coffee, put the marking pen down, and let’s unpack this together. What You Will Get From This Episode ☕ Stop Rewriting: Why you shouldn't throw out your existing schemes of work to start from scratch. 🔍 The 6 Lenses: How to do a rapid "curriculum audit light" on a single Year 8 or 9 unit without sacrificing your weekend. 📖 Reluctant Readers: The power of contemporary local literature to reflect modern themes and diverse identities in the classroom. 💸 Zero-Budget Inspiration: How to secure funded author visits through the Writers in Schools scheme. Ep 6: The Truth about Vaping in Schools: Tackling the Trend Without the Stress (ft. HIP Psychology) 🧠✨

It smells like sweets, looks like a highlighter, and it’s causing a massive headache in schools across NI. 🍬😩 Let’s be honest: keeping up with the vaping trend feels like a full-time job. You’re finding them in toilets, they’re hidden in pencil cases, and the old-school "just say no" lectures simply aren't cutting it with students. You’re worried about their health, but you’re also just trying to get through the day without another confiscation battle. In this episode, we’re bringing in the reinforcements. We welcome back Cormac from HIP Psychology, joined this time by Jenna and Carlos. They aren't just guessing at solutions; they’ve collaborated directly with Queen’s University Belfast to uncover the psychological truth about why young people are vaping—and how we can actually get through to them. We discuss: 🤯 The Shocking Truth: Why one standard vape pod can equal 20 cigarettes in nicotine. 🕵️♂️ Hidden in Plain Sight: How to spot the devices disguised as everyday classroom items. 🗣️ Better Conversations: Moving away from punishment and towards psychology-backed chats that students will actually listen to. Save time & get support now:Don't reinvent the wheel.
