#2 Raavoyi Chandamaama by Shanmukh Behara

Though Savitri garu had shown great potential as an emerging actress with author-backed roles in films like Devadasu and Kanyasulkam, it was Missamma that catapulted her to star status overnight. Complimenting her performance Bhanumathi then said, “Over a trivial issue I missed a good role. But I am happy that my opting out helped the industry find a fine actress called Savitri.” The Story: Circumstances lead a young Christian woman and a Hindu young man to act as spouses, to land in jobs as teachers in a village school run by the local zamindar in his eldest daughter’s name who went missing some 16 years earlier when she was four. The zamindar’s nephew fashions himself as a detective and is on the lookout for the missing daughter. Travelling smoothly through light banter, the movie ends in a family reunion after it is revealed that the young Christian woman who came to teach music to the zamindar’s second daughter is none other than the zamindar’s missing daughter. The Song: The Song happens in the film as Savitri, the film’s heroine, has started to notice enough of NTRs qualities to soften her appreciation of him. The fun contained in this song is still felt as we see the two in the front yard, at the beginning of Ravoi chandamama. Savitri asks NTR to leave her alone, and he taunts her as to what might happen if he doesn’t leave. She ignores him, pretending to be angry at his wilful disobedience. Then, behind her, he begins the song: . raavoyi chandamaama maa vinta gaadha vinumaa, raavoyi chandamama . and she turns her still irate demeanour towards him. But this soon melts, and we see NTR, gloriously enjoying his effect, opening his arms to the wonder of love, so evidently pleased of everything about her and their new relationship. But soon he’s the one surprised: for she takes up the song’s melody, and he springs up to meet her, walking to her as he repeats the invocation to the night breeze, to the moon shining down on them, whose pale rays are reflected on the sands of the riverside. The magic can begin. How many times have lovers in the history of the world, sung the time, the place, the hour of their love? How many have done so, knowing they were creating an everlasting memento to a past they would relish to revisit, which they knew was fleeting, should be tasted at its full, and yet represented an immortal present from which suffering and death was excluded? pratinalu palikina patitO bratukaga vacchina satinOy maaTalu bootakamaaye natanalu nerchenu chaalaa raavOyi The creation of love asks nothing from anything else in the world but its own passionate tenderness, its own words, its own renewal in the eyes of the beloved. Its eternity belongs to the abolition of time while it is being created, celebrated and devoured. It is like the sun: the sun will continue to shine almost forever, as long as there’s thermonuclear energy to fuel it; love too will illuminate the lovers as long as its energy, Energy, pouring forth from both hearts and souls, fuels them enough response to burn and live. Meanwhile, time stops, and there is light. Light in the darkness of infinite space and warmth in the coldness of deepest emptiness.
