The Weight of Being Erased: Grief, Resistance, and the Power of Queer Joy

This episode discusses erasure, grief, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and minority stress. It is not a crisis episode; it moves toward resilience, but please care for yourself as you listen.

This episode takes seriously something the queer community is rarely given space to name: the grief that accumulates when your existence is politically contested. Dr. Gary Howell walks through the psychological framework of minority stress and erasure grief, then pivots firmly and joyfully toward the three antidotes: community, visibility, and joy.

The episode is clinical, personal, theoretical, and lived.

References:

Meyer (2003), Minority Stress https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0033-2909.129.5.674

Posttraumatic Growth https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9807114/pdf/cn-19-390.pdf

Resources:

• The Trevor Project: TheTrevorProject.org / 1-866-488-7386

• Trans Lifeline: TransLifeline.org / 877-565-8860

• SAMHSA National Helpline: 1-800-662-4357

We're Still Here: The Megaphone Comes Back On!

When Queer Folx Megaphone launched in June 2020, it arrived in one of the most turbulent moments in recent history: the peak of the pandemic, nationwide racial justice uprisings, and the 4th anniversary of the Pulse massacre. It was a show born out of urgency.

A megaphone was turned on because the community needed amplification. The comeback episode honors that origin while acknowledging the silence that has followed. Dr. Gary Howell, a gay psychologist and educator, returns not with an apology for the pause, but with a reckoning: What has the queer community been through since 2020? What has Gary been through? And why does this megaphone need to be louder now thanever?

This episode is about coming back: to yourself, to your people, to your voice. It sets the stage for a reimagined season while giving longtime listeners closure and new listeners acompelling entry point.

SAY THEIR NAMES: Remembering Pulse and the 49 Victims 4 Years Later

This podcast may be triggering. It is my memory of the tragic day that impacted the sexual and gender minority community forever. We will never forget and grew closer as a community out of this tragedy. We need to rise again!
