"The Walk Out" - Alice Kinsella

The Walk Out by Alice Kinsella “She saw it coming: the cold pit in the bed, his irregular hours, strolling in with expectation for dinner, a rub of her legs. She wondered if he had a second family, like in the films: a better-dressed wife pops up at a patriarch’s funeral, towing two children with his eyes. She heard the door in the morning —like a departure for work, imagined dew on the windscreen, pink sky, squabbling birds— after a night of straying, his soft steps on the stairs a too-needed snuggle, sour breath close to hers. When it happened, she didn’t know it would be the last time, that tired cliche. Her hands in his hair, the rumble of his throat. When she woke, an indent in the pillow was all that remained. She felt nothing but normal as she packed lunches, swept floors, filled bowls. In the weeks that followed, she told herself he’d return. She wasn’t the first woman scorned, to be a doormat to an ungrateful—No, she stopped herself. He’d be back. Eventually, the child asked, mum, where’s the cat?

   "Peers" - Craig Morgan Teicher

“Peers” By Craig Morgan Teicher I’m thinking of you beautiful and young, of me young and confused and maybe beautiful. There were lots of us— these were our twenties, when, post-9/11, we were about to inherit the world, and we had no idea what to do with it. And look what we did, and we didn’t. And now look at us, and it. We turned away for a blip, started whispering, kissing, had kids, bought houses, changed bulbs, submitted claims, changed channels, FaceTimed, streamed, upgraded, were two-day-shipped to, and midway through our prime earning years we look up again, decades groggy, decades late. Forgive us, we thought— but now it doesn’t matter. These are our outcomes, consequences, faults, forties, when the hourglass is beeping and bleak and people like us have memories like this and wonder if the beauty that’s left is really still beautiful, if it was.

   "The Debate" - Alison Luterman

“The Debate” by Alison Luterman I’m listening to my father and his brother, both in their eighties, debate their childhood from adjoining La-Z-Boy recliners. “We had no toys,” my father insists. “What are you talking about, no toys?” My uncle practically leaps from his chair, except he can’t, on account of his back and his legs and his feet and his hips. “We had tons of toys!” Then he lists them: the playing cards (“Those don’t count,” my father says); the train set (“Oh, yeah, I forgot about the train set”); the sleds — “Did anyone else on our block have sleds?” Uncle Barry asks. “Nineteen-forty, people are crawling out of the Great Depression on hands and knees, tell me: Did anyone on our block besides us have a sled?” My father’s father had a good job delivering newspapers and brought home sixty-five dollars a week, enough for Chinese food every Friday and cupcakes on birthdays. “We really didn’t have birthday parties,” my father contends, and my uncle lunges at this. “What are you talking about? What about that surprise party when you turned thirteen?” “That was the only time,” my father counters. Don’t even try, Uncle Barry, I almost say, then catch myself. I want this unwinnable argument to continue — forever, if possible. I want the Brooklyn music of their voices entwined in a duet with no resolution. I want the song — half lament, half celebration — to go on and on and on.
