While deportations were happening during the interwar period, as you mentioned, the period between 1921 and 1944, at the federal level, right, and have been happening, throughout different administrations since then and before then, the families that I write about and the historical episodes that I document in the book are not centering on the deportations themselves, right? They're centering in what was widely referred by both the Mexican government and the U.S. government um as repatriation that I have um referred to as banishment because repatriation so deportation on the one hand is a legal expulsion of a person who's undocumented who um in essence has to go through a legal process um through a court system, has a right to appeal, has a right to present their case in front of an immigration judge, right? […]
