Joining the Dots - Episode 27 - Breast Cancer Awareness, Flu Vaccines and our Jill reflects on her marathon bike ride
October has arrived and with it comes a new season and Autumn means flu vaccines are back on the agenda as we head into the colder months. We'll be finding out from some of those involved in the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (https://www.facebook.com/cardiffandvaleuhb) awareness campaign why they are having theirs.
We’ll also have the first of our discussions about breast cancer as October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Charities such as Breast Cancer Now (https://breastcancernow.org/about-us/our-impact/breast-cancer-facts-and-statistics) Future Dreams (https://futuredreams.org.uk/) and CoppaFeel (https://coppafeel.org/) as well as those who have been through breast cancer, like Emma Campbell (https://www.instagram.com/limitless_em/), will feature on the show this month. Also 100 days on from cycling London to Brighton, one of Hospital Radio Glamorgan volunteers, Jill Brinkworth (https://www.radioglamorgan.com/presenters/), reflects on her bike ride on the hottest day of the year. Jill cycled for two of her favourite charities, Hospital Radio Glamorgan of course, and Marie Curie (https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/services/hospices/cardiff). Joining the Dots - Episode 26 - Blood Cancer Awareness and our Cardiff Half Marathon coverage
Blood Cancer Awareness Month is drawing to a close, but raising its profile goes way beyond a month-long campaign. Like all cancers, information is key and on this show we hear from people who have it and from people who work in the area of research, as well as those caring for people with it.
Blood cancer charities are running a variety of campaigns focusing on different areas. For example, Blood Cancer UK (https://bloodcancer.org.uk/)‘s ‘here for this’ campaign is focusing on community members sharing the milestones they have lived for and still hope to see; Leukaemia Care (https://www.leukaemiauk.org.uk/) has focused on ‘spot leukaemia”, an awareness drive designed to help people recognise persistent signs and symptoms, whereas the Lymphoma Action (https://lymphoma-action.org.uk/) charity’s “Let’s Talk Lymphoma” Advocacy, the charity is actively inviting individuals affected by the condition to write directly to their MPs, MSPs, or MSs. This push aims to educate political decision-makers on the realities of living with the disease and secure improved parliamentary support for early diagnosis, care, and treatment. And those are only a few of the campaigns running this month.

We’ll be on air between 9am and 2pm to bring you stories from the race from the people running and those supporting them.
Don’t forget there will be road closures (https://www.cardiffhalfmarathon.co.uk/event-info/road-closures/) as a result of the Cardiff Half, so factor those in, especially if you need to get to a hospital.

Joining The Dots - Episode 25 – Migraine, Movement, Organ Donation and Deaf Awareness plus, a big ‘thank you’
This is an important week in the ‘awareness and prevention’ calendar, and as always, there are plenty of opportunities to engage with a host of campaigns which occur this month. Falls Awareness (sometimes referred to as Prevention) Week highlights the importance of being mobile and active in later life and campaigning groups such as Age Cymru (https://www.agecymru.wales/our-work/promoting-health-and-wellbeing/falls/national-falls-awareness-week/) as well as the local health authorities, including ours here in Cardiff and Vale, are offering awareness advice and prevention tips in an effort to ensure that more of us stay on our feet safely and for longer.
For those of you who are in the catchment area of the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, the authority has a dedicated Falls Team (https://www.facebook.com/cardiffandvaleuhb), and this week they are based at Barry Library for three mornings, 10-12, to offer advice and support around preventing falls. Their first day is Monday 20th and they are also there on Tuesday and Thursday. And if you can’t get to Barry but you’re concerned about your mobility you can get in touch with the Stay Steady Clinic on 02921 832552.
It is also Migraine Awareness Week, where the campaign tagline is ‘believe me/us’ as the Migraine Trust (https://migrainetrust.org/) calls for more action on raising awareness and getting skeptics to believe those who suffer with the debilitating headaches. On Wednesday, Sept 23, the United Nations will mark International Day of Sign Languages (https://www.un.org/en/observances/sign-languages-day), which coincides with Deaf Awareness Week.
And, this week is also Organ Donation Week (https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/get-involved/organ-donation-campaigns/organ-donation-week/). Today, 8691 people are waiting for a transplant in the UK and 1572 have received a transplant from a deceased donor since April this year. Almost 40% of opt-in registrations on the organ donation register are people aged between 18-34 and since 2020/21 consent for organ donation has fallen from 69% to 57% this year, but the good news is that almost 29 million of us have agreed to donate our organs after death.
